The story leans heavily on biblical undertones, echoing the Cain and Abel narrative through its two rival brothers and the parents whose choices shape them long before those sons are born.

How the 1955 Film Adaptation Compares

The version most audiences already know is Elia Kazan’s 1955 film starring James Dean, but that movie only adapted a fraction of Steinbeck’s book. It focused on the final section of the novel, with Dean playing Cal Trask alongside Julie Harris, Raymond Massey, Richard Davalos, and Jo Van Fleet.

That film made Dean a star in his first leading role, and it earned him a posthumous Academy Award nomination for best actor after his death in a car accident just months after the film opened. Van Fleet won best supporting actress for her performance as Cathy, and the film received four Oscar nominations overall.

Because the film compressed such a wide ranging book into a single feature, it left most of the earlier generational story untouched. Zoe Kazan has been direct about that gap, noting that her grandfather’s movie is not a fully faithful adaptation of the small portion of the book it actually covers.

A three part ABC miniseries also tackled the novel in 1981, starring Timothy Bottoms and Jane Seymour, but Netflix’s series marks the first time the book has been adapted for television in a serialized way, allowing the story to unfold in detail while staying closer to the novel’s themes and character arcs.

Zoe Kazan’s Personal Connection to the Source Material

Kazan’s link to ‘East of Eden’ runs directly through her family, since her grandfather directed the definitive earlier film version. In an interview with Tudum, she said that the movie isn’t a super faithful adaptation of the small part of the book it is adapting, and that the whole epic story gave her a chance to explore and fall in love with all of its characters.

Kazan has also said that bringing the family saga to life carried real resonance given her personal connection to the material, but that it was Steinbeck’s writing itself, which she called personal, shocking, profound, and free, that kept her enthralled with the book since she first read it as a young teenager.

When it came to casting Cathy Ames, Kazan has said she never had a backup in mind, and that there was no other performer she believed could do the role as well as Pugh.

Jeb Stuart serves as co-showrunner alongside Kazan, while Garth Davis directed episodes one through four and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed episodes five through seven.

The series was filmed across multiple locations in New Zealand, and production took place in South Island cities including Dunedin and Oamaru. Filming wrapped in early 2025 before the show moved into an extended post production process.

‘East of Eden’ hails from the co-studios Fifth Season and Anonymous Content, and Netflix’s official synopsis describes a fiercely independent woman who drives a rift between two brothers, igniting a saga that unfolds across two generations.

The series spans decades in the lives of Cathy and the Trask family, bookended by the American Civil War and World War I, giving the show far more room to breathe than the 1955 film ever had.
