The entire Vinland Saga storyline basically revolves around Thorfinn’s life story as we started following his journey when he was still just six years old. In that regard, we saw a lot about his life and the things that happened to him over the course of a single season. So, with that said, let’s look at how old Thorfinn is during the events of the Vinland Saga.

Thorfinn’s Age At The Start

Those who want a refreshing type of anime should be able to enjoy Vinland Saga due to the fact that it doesn’t come with the over-the-top action and events that anime usually comes with. This series follows the story of Thorfinn, who started out as a young boy that lived a peaceful life with his family in Greenland. But what he didn’t know was that he was the son of a legendary Viking commander.

The storyline began when Thors, Thorfinn’s father, was introduced during a great battle that was supposedly what killed him. However, he faked his death so that he could escape the life of constant wars and battles and start a family with his wife. That was when they moved to Greenland, where they were able to start a peaceful life with a good family.

Will Thorfinn Ever Surpass Thors in Vinland Saga?

In that regard, Thorfinn was first introduced as a fun-loving and curious boy at the age of six. He was seen living the life of a normal boy in a peaceful village in Greenland. However, when the Danish army found out that Thors was alive the entire time, they decided to call him back for war once more. Fearing for the lives of his family and the villagers, Thors had no choice but to go to war.

Thorfinn snuck onboard the ship that Thors used to join the main army. But what they didn’t know was that this was an assassination plot all along because Floki, the Jomsviking commander, wanted Thors dead for deserting them years ago. Floki contracted the services of Askeladd, a mercenary leader, to kill Thors.

Thors ended up dying in the ambush by Askeladd, as the legendary Jomsviking decided to die so that his son and the other men could live. However, instead of joining the other men that returned to Greenland, Thorfinn followed Askeladd’s band so that he could take revenge for the death of his father. And he decided to join the band of mercenaries because he needed to become strong enough to take on Askeladd in single combat so that he may kill him in an honorable way.

Thorfinn’s Age While In Askeladd’s Band

While Thorfinn was with Askeladd’s band, he spent years working on his skills and fighting countless battles so that he could become strong enough to kill the man responsible for the death of his father. He was seen fighting in the attack on East Anglia when he was just 12 years old. Despite his young age, he was a very useful part of Askeladd’s band because he was faster and more precise than any of the other mercenaries.

Over the next few years, Thorfinn continued his life as a mercenary working under Askeladd during the War arc, which was the war between Denmark and England. Despite his age, he had become a numb young teenager that didn’t care about the world around him as long as he could get what he wanted—a fair duel from Askeladd.

Thorfinn was around the age of 16 years old during the start of the War arc. He spent around one or two years fighting countless battles and killing hundreds of men. Thorfinn was just a teenager when he battled his great-uncle Thorkell during the war against England.

At the end of the War arc, Denmark was victorious. However, King Sweyn decided to invade, and that angered Askeladd because all he wanted to do was to protect his homeland from the Viking attacks. That was when Askeladd rampaged throughout the entire dining hall, killing King Sweyn in the process. Prince Canute ended Askeladd’s life, and this angered Thorfinn because the one thing that he wanted in life had been taken away from him.

Thorfinn spent the next three or four years working as a slave on Ketil’s farm during the Slavery arc. During that time, he had become a cold and lifeless young man due to the fact that he no longer had any reason to live. And he was also haunted tirelessly by the men he killed in the past.

The nightmares that Thorfinn experienced during his life as a slave made him decide that he would never hurt another person for no good reason again. Thorfinn also ended up realizing that his quest for vengeance was empty and meaningless. By the end of the Slavery arc, Thorfinn was around the age of 22.
