How & When Did Voldemort Get Nagini?

Nagini is Voldemort’s snake, his great companion, and a vicious creature, responsible for many horrors around Harry Potter and his friends. She was introduced to us in The Goblet of Fire, but the story between Voldemort and herself goes way back. So how and when exactly did Voldemort get Nagini?

Tom Riddle was an orphan who started to learn about his skills while growing up in an orphanage. He soon noticed a snake following him and communicating with him. It was then that he met Nagini and realized that he can talk to snakes.

But there is so much more to the story about Voldemort and Nagini. Its background is pretty scary, but in a way sad, too. Let’s find out more about it.

Who was Nagini before she was a snake?

Nagini was a young girl, a lost soul who was searching for love and devotion. She found it in a fellow outcast, Credence Barebone, a boy and an interesting wizard who was trying to be accepted. But Credence abandoned her due to different beliefs and views and Nagini became devastated. She knew she was a Maledictus, a person who changes forms and she was aware that she is going to turn into a snake for good very soon.

She didn’t want to be played again, so she decided to lay low and completely change her way of living. She will break any ropes she had with the wizarding world and try to find security and happiness between muggles. She was hired in an orphanage where everything was going so well until she met a baby she instantly grew fond of. But there was so much more than a normal relationship between them.

Nagini felt the baby’s needs and felt as if it was calling out for her all the time. Suddenly her transformations started to happen more often and she decided to leave the orphanage before causing more harm.

Tom Riddle and Nagini’s relationship

As he was growing up, Tom Riddle began to realize there was something different about him. He was slowly starting to acknowledge his hidden powers. Among them was the apparent ability to talk to snakes. He noticed one following him all the time and it became obvious to him that someone was trying to communicate with him. A woman, when there was no one around him. 

He could hear her thoughts and slowly began talking to the snake. Nagini managed to get close to him. As a mother to her child. She would even do little things for him, such as scare kids for fun. He perfected his communication, becoming a strong and powerful Parselmouth 

Lord Voldemort and Nagini’s connection

As Tom Riddle grew stronger, his connection to Nagini also started changing, becoming even more powerful and dangerous. It became so strong that he could even possess her. It was natural for them to telepathically communicate and send each other messages. She performed many monstrosities in his name and assisted in numerous murders or hideous tormenting.

Arthur Weasley was one of the few who could tell the tale of this terrifying creature since he was the one who survived her attack. Many weren’t that lucky, such as the unfortunate Professor Snape who suffered such a gruesome death. Lord Voldemort unleashed Nagini on him, ending his life so emotionless and cold heartedly. 

Why did Voldemort put Nagini in Bathilda?

Nagini assisted in one of the most horrifying scenes of the whole Harry Potter series. She was put in the corpse of Bathilda Bagshot, hiding to attack and kill Harry and Hermione. They went to visit Bathilda but soon found out that she was dead and that Nagini was waiting for them in Bathilda’s dead body. 

Nagini was the final Horcrux

Nagini was the last Horcrux to be killed in the series, but she was also the last one to be created. The murder of Bertha Jorkins made her a Horcrux. She was magically protected after Voldemort found out what was starting to happen to his Horcruxes. But due to some circumstances and Voldemort’s mistake, he released Nagini and sent her to her death. Harry wasn’t dead as he assumed and had already given the task to Neville to finish the last piece of Voldemort’s soul.

It was great and exciting news to find out that we are going to learn a lot more about Nagini, not as a snake, but as the girl she was before she completely transformed. We will get to know her better, see what she was like as a human and find out more about what it really means to be a Maledictus.
