Hulu Cancels Hit Sitcom After One Season Despite 88% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Hulu has canceled the sitcom Mid-Century Modern after just one season.
The show’s co-creator, Max Mutchnick, shared the news on Instagram, writing, “Ten great episodes… Not enough. But we loved making every single one of them. We’re gonna miss our very special show. Thanks to everyone who watched.”

The series debuted on Hulu on March 28, 2025, and starred Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, Nathan Lee Graham, and Linda Lavin.
Sadly, Lavin passed away in December 2024 before the show premiered. Her final performance appears in eight episodes after some of her scenes were moved from episode four to episode eight.
Mid-Century Modern followed three late middle-aged gay friends living together in Palm Springs, California. The friends navigate their golden years with support from each other and the wealthiest friend’s mother, forming a close chosen family. The show blended humor with heartfelt stories about friendship, love, and aging.
Critics generally liked the series. Rotten Tomatoes gave it an 88% score based on 26 reviews, with an average rating of 7.4/10.
The site’s consensus reads, “Harkening back to the classic sitcom formula while unafraid to have a contemporary, risqué sense of humor, Mid-Century Modern is endearingly old-fashioned.” Metacritic gave it a score of 66 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews.
Matthew Creith of TheWrap praised the show’s mix of classic sitcom charm and a fresh, gay perspective. He wrote that the chemistry between Lane, Bomer, Graham, and Lavin was the heart of the show and compared it to The Golden Girls and Hot in Cleveland. He also highlighted Lavin’s final performance as a standout moment.
Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times called the show heartfelt and noted how it balanced humor with meaningful portrayals of friendship. He said Lane’s lead role and the older ensemble cast gave the sitcom a timely and refreshing feel.
Despite positive reviews and praise for its cast and humor, Hulu decided to cancel Mid-Century Modern after one season.
It’s always disappointing when a show with strong performances and good reviews gets canceled so quickly. The series had a lot of heart and a unique perspective that isn’t often seen on television. What do you think about Hulu canceling the show? Share your thoughts in the comments.
