Hulu is bringing back Prison Break with a new series developed by Elgin James.

The reboot follows an ex-soldier who becomes a corrections officer at one of the country’s most dangerous prisons. Her goal is personal: she wants to prove how far she’ll go to protect someone she cares about.

Emily Browning stars as Cassidy, the main character. The cast also includes Drake Rodger as Tommy, Lukas Gage as Jackson, Clayton Cardenas as Michael “Ghost,” JR Bourne as Junior, Georgie Flores as Andrea, and Myles Bullock as Darius “Red.”

The pilot also featured Priscilla Delgado, Ray McKinnon, Margo Martindale, Donal Logue, Lili Taylor, and Sylvester Powell.

According to sources, James’ version exists in the same universe as the original Fox series created by Paul Scheuring, but it will focus on new characters.

Original stars Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) are not expected to appear. The spinoff was first announced in late 2023 and moved to pilot production in December of that year.

The original Prison Break told the story of two brothers, Lincoln Burrows and Michael Scofield. Lincoln is sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t commit, and Michael plans an elaborate prison escape to save him.

The show was a critical and commercial success, praised for its suspenseful storytelling. It was produced by Scheuring, Matt Olmstead, Kevin Hooks, Marty Adelstein, Dawn Parouse, Neal H. Moritz, and Brett Ratner, who directed the pilot. Its theme music, composed by Ramin Djawadi, received an Emmy nomination in 2006.

Prison Break was originally turned down by Fox in 2003 but was picked up in 2004 after serialized shows like 24 and Lost proved there was an audience for complex, ongoing storylines.

The first season was extended due to its popularity, and the series continued for multiple seasons, earning awards and nominations along the way. Spin-offs and tie-ins, including a mobile game, webisodes, a magazine, and a novel, helped expand the franchise.

The series also produced additional episodes later compiled into the feature The Final Break. A fifth season aired in 2017, but plans for a sixth season stalled, and Wentworth Miller confirmed in 2020 that he had no plans to return.

The Hulu reboot will introduce a new story while keeping the high-stakes, suspenseful spirit of the original.
