Will Smith will officially return as Dr. Robert Neville in the sequel to the 2007 post-apocalyptic action thriller film I Am Legend, Deadline has learned. Smith will reprise the main role, and Michael B. Jordan will join to star alongside him in the sequel. Both Smith and Jordan will also produce the movie, while Akiva Goldsman, co-writer of the original film, returns to pen the script.
Loosely based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson, the I Am Legend movie was released in December 2007. The movie follows Dr. Robert Neville, who is trying to find a cure for nocturnal mutants after a virus (originally created to cure cancer) has wiped out most of humankind, leaving Neville, his loyal dog Sam, and the hostile mutants to only living beings in the New York City. Neville is immune to the virus, and he’s trying to fix the situation (as much as he can).
The movie grossed $585.4 million worldwide against the production budget of $150 million. Now, 15 years after the movie’s release, the movie is officially set to get a sequel. Despite the movie’s ending, Smith is still set to return as Neville, and Michael B. Jordan is set to join the sequel in an undisclosed role.
Will Smith recently starred in the biopic King Richard, which is nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Smith). As a producer, Smith is also listed to get an Oscar if the movie wins the award for Best Picture. Michael B. Jordan is currently working on Creed III, in which he’ll reprise the titular role, and the movie will also be his debut as the director.
