‘I Hate Christmas’ Ending Explained: Who Will Gianna Take to Her Christmas Dinner?

Welcome to the Ending Explained for I Hate Christmas, a new Italian Netflix TV series coming to brighten the holidays this weekend. I Hate Christmas defines itself by being a romantic comedy and a Christmas story at the same time. These two genres have been very close to each other for decades. And it seems like Netflix has been really pushing the mix this year, with a great number of movies and TV shows guiding themselves through the use of the tropes and conventions of those genres.
I Hate Christmas tells the story of Gianna as she tries to find a boyfriend to take home on Christmas day. However, things are easier said than done. I Hate Christmas is a charming story that really knows how not to overstay its welcome by just being six episodes long and making each episode run no more than 30 minutes. You can binge this in one entire day, and the characters and the story will bring you that cozy feeling we all look for in a Christmas story. It is certainly worth the watch this holiday season.

Why Is Gianna Looking For A Boyfriend?
The series begins with the introduction of Gianna, our main character. Gianna is thirty years old, and she is a nurse. She loves her job, she has very close friends, she is very close to her older sister, and she is single. This last fact seems to be the concern of the entire family. Gianna has been single for more than three years, and she doesn’t seem to be in a rush to find another romantic partner. However, her mom is worried that her daughter will end up being alone forever.
Gianna feels the pressure coming from every angle. After having a very bad day, when everyone wanted to remind her just how awful it is to be alone. She lies to her family by saying that she has a boyfriend and that she will bring him to their Christmas family dinner this year. This is a huge mistake because Gianna has absolutely no prospects for a boyfriend, and she doesn’t really know how to even start looking for one. Francesco, Gianna’s last boyfriend, left her, and since then, she has been having a hard time getting close to people in that way.
She discusses the situation with her friends, Caterina, Margherita, and Titti. Titti is Gianna’s best friend; they live together, and he is very independent. Caterina is the owner of a café where they gather most of the time, she is very innocent, and she is still a virgin, saving herself for marriage. Meanwhile, Margherita is Gianna’s older sister, her husband neglects her, and she is stressed most of the time. They tried to help Gianna and even find her some dates, but it all seemed quite a lost cause.
At work, Gianna works as a nurse, but she always goes the extra mile and cares for her patients more than just by giving them the proper medicine at the right time. She understands that people need more than that. Sometimes they require a hug, a smile, or being able to work outside. Ginna takes very close care of an old lady called Matilde, and a drug addict in recovery named Patrizio. She also begins establishing a friendship with Umberto, a new doctor from Florence who is still finding his bearing in Venezia.
Who Will Gianna Take To Her Christmas Dinner?
Throughout the course of the season, we see Gianna going on many dates with men that are very different from each other. She is trying everything in order to find that special person. She first dates a professor called Nicola and then a fish seller called Mario. Both dates end up in disaster. She then meets Carlo, a very successful businessman. He is in a wheelchair, but that hasn’t stopped him from always being in search of new experiences and overcoming his limits. However, when he forces Gianna to board a plane when he knows she is scared of flying, Gianna flees.
At work, his relationship with Umberto keeps improving. Umberto clearly likes her, but he is too shy. Gianna also meets Diego, who seamlessly ignores her every time until she learns he is deaf, so he never really hears her every time she says hello. In an unexpected turn of events, Titti ends up dating Mario, Gianna’s failed date, and she is scared because she really likes him. They even end up having sex and sleeping together while hugging each other. Titti doesn’t know what to do.
Meanwhile, Margherita ends up having sex with Thomas. This event clashes with Caterina, who really liked Thomas but was never brave enough to tell her. However, Gianna introduces Caterina to Diego, and Caterina surprises Diego by speaking in sign language. They start dating and look very cute together. Gianna also finds out that her parents have relationships outside of marriage. Gianna realizes that everyone is looking for love on Christmas and that the only way to receive love is to give it.
At the hospital, Umberto finally gathers the courage to declare his feelings to Gianna, and they are open to the possibility of there being something more than friendship between them. At the Christmas dinner, Gianna is not able to bring a boyfriend home, but she brings Diego, Caterina, Matilde, Titti, and Mario to share Christmas with them. At the end of the episode, the doorbell rings, and Gianna opens the door. Gianna doesn’t reveal who was on the other side of the door, but it is implied that it is someone she likes. It could be Carlo or Umberto or even her ex, Francesco. Maybe we will learn the answer in season 2.
