Ian McKellen’s Magneto Finally Wears the X-Men Symbol After 26 Years in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel Studios has spent the better part of two years teasing its mutant era, and nothing has generated quite as much chatter as the return of the original X-Men cast. Fans have waited since 2000 to see how the franchise would evolve once it crossed over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Ian McKellen’s Magneto has always been at the center of that curiosity.
That anticipation only grew heavier around San Diego Comic Con 2026, when Marvel used the convention to unveil fresh footage and merchandise tied to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. The film was a major highlight of the event, with Robert Downey Jr. and other stars presenting a new trailer that focused heavily on Doctor Doom while offering only brief glimpses of McKellen’s Magneto and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X.
Now the wait for a clearer look is over. Newly surfaced character art and merchandise have revealed that McKellen’s Magneto will wear an X-Men belt buckle at his waist, marking the first time the actor’s version of the character has ever worn the team’s symbol since his debut in the first X-Men film. The design places the movie’s heroes inside individual display panels, showing Magneto in his classic helmet and a red tunic with a fur trimmed cape draped over his shoulders.
The look pulls directly from the comics, where Erik Lehnsherr’s red and purple color scheme defined the character for decades, and it matches a wave of ‘Avengers Doomsday’ merchandise revealed around Comic Con. Hot Toys, Hasbro, and Iron Studios all unveiled Magneto collectibles bearing the same X logo buckle, confirming the detail comes straight from the film rather than a one off promotional choice. Hot Toys’ own figure shows a tailored long sleeved tunic, matching pants, tall boots, and a belt accented by that X logo buckle, completed by a dramatic gray cape with a burgundy interior lining.
The costume overhaul is a notable departure for McKellen, whose Magneto has historically leaned dark and understated. The character’s live action iterations have mostly stuck to black and brown shades rather than the comic accurate reds fans have long hoped to see on screen. Marvel Studios appears to be embracing its source material in a way twentieth century Fox rarely did, and McKellen is not the only cast member getting a wardrobe upgrade as a result.
McKellen, 87, originated the role in ‘X-Men’ back in 2000, then reprised it in ‘X2 X-Men United’ and ‘X-Men The Last Stand,’ before returning alongside Michael Fassbender in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past.’ More on this costume reveal was first detailed by The Direct, which noted that ‘Avengers Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18, with Anthony and Joe Russo directing a story that picks up fourteen months after the events of ‘Thunderbolts’.
