In “Obsession,” Navarrette played Nikki, a young woman trapped in a horrifying curse after her friend Bear, played by Michael Johnston, makes a wish that she’d love him more than anyone else on earth. The dual nature of the role, requiring Navarrette to portray both a grounded, fully realized woman and a possessed, altered version of that same character, became one of the film’s most talked-about elements and a clear showcase for her range.
That performance has already translated into one of the year’s most notable casting announcements. Navarrette is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Rogue, stepping into one of the X-Men franchise’s most beloved characters as Marvel continues expanding its mutant roster on screen.
