Infinity Ward Confirms They’re Working On The Next ‘Call of Duty’ Game

Call of Duty is one of the most known video game franchises ever. In 2003, Infinity Ward released the original game out of defiance to Electronic Arts’ Medal of Honor franchise which was known as the most popular first-person shooter game at the time. Two years later, Infinity Ward released the sequel — Call of Duty 2 — and since then, no year has passed without getting at least one Call of Duty game to this day.

The franchise evolved to unimaginable proportions since then. Today, 18 main Call of Duty titles were released, but not all of them were made by Infinity Ward. Their software cooperators, Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games also developed several CoD games, so the studios began the so-called three-year rotation in 2014. Considering that 2020’s Call of Duty was made by Treyarch, and 2021’s was made by Sledgehammer Games, it was already presumed that this year’s installment will be developed by the original developer Infinity Ward, and that was confirmed today on their official Twitter account.

The Call of Duty franchise is still widely successful, but Infinity Ward’s installments are always extra anticipated. In 2007, Infinity Ward developed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which was a revolution in the FPS genre and it remained one of the best acclaimed FPS games of all time. Two years later, the sequel Modern Warfare 2 was even more successful, and the trilogy concluded with 2011’s Modern Warfare 3, which also received acclaim from the fans.

The first two Modern Warfare titles were remastered for the new generation of consoles in 2016 and 2020, respectively, and while Activision said that Modern Warfare 3 won’t be remastered, we are still hoping that they might do it one day. Meanwhile, Infinity Ward developed a reboot of the Modern Warfare series with 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, after Infinity Ward’s previous CoD titles (Ghosts and Infinite Warfare) apparently weren’t successful enough to earn sequels.

Although it wasn’t confirmed yet, most of the rumors are suggesting that this year’s Call of Duty will be a sequel to the Modern Warfare reboot. So, it would be Modern Warfare 2, but not the one we played back in 2009. It’s kinda confusing, but we’re certainly looking forward to the official announcement of the next Call of Duty. Knowing Activision, the game should be officially announced next spring.

Last month, Xbox announced that they’re buying Activision, the publisher of the Call of Duty franchise. That opened up a question if the Call of Duty will become an Xbox exclusive. But the good news is that the acquisition won’t be finalized until 2023, so the Call of Duty fans who are owners of PlayStation can sleep tight for now. Also, Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming and the head of the Xbox brand revealed that they’re planning to keep Call of Duty a multiplatform franchise. It’s unknown what new things this acquisition might bring to the Call of Duty franchise, but the time will tell us everything we need to know. For now, we are waiting for the next CoD later this year.
