The Insidious franchise is coming back for more scares. Even though producer Jason Blum once said the series would take “a very long rest” after the fifth movie, plans clearly changed. Now, a sixth film is in the works, and it looks like the story is heading in a whole new direction.

According to a report from NexusPoint News, the next movie still doesn’t have a title, but it does have a release date. It was originally going to come out on August 29, 2025, but now it’s set for August 21, 2026. Filming is expected to begin on September 15, 2025, and for the first time, the franchise is moving production to Melbourne, Australia.

The change in location is a big one. The earlier Insidious films were mostly shot in California, and The Red Door was filmed in New Jersey. Shooting in Australia could mean this movie is doing something totally different.

So far, none of the original actors are confirmed to return, which makes it even more likely that the new film will focus on a different story, maybe even a brand-new set of characters.

The project is being produced by longtime Insidious creators and producers—Jason Blum, James Wan, Leigh Whannell, Ryan Turek, Oren Peli, and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones. These are the people who’ve helped shape the franchise since it began back in 2010.

Right now, the casting team is looking for three supporting characters. Their names are Lester, Patsy, and Edna. All three are older BIPOC characters who are described as creepy and disturbing. Each of them is said to torment a neighbor, and casting calls are asking for people with “unique, frightening appearances.” That description has fans wondering if the story will take place in a haunted neighborhood or some eerie, isolated town.

This new movie isn’t the only thing Insidious-related happening. In 2022, a spin-off was announced. The film was later given the title Thread: An Insidious Tale, with Jeremy Slater directing and James Wan producing. Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani are set to star. Not much is known about the plot, but it’s expected to be a separate story from the main series.

There’s also been talk of a possible crossover between Insidious and Sinister. Back in 2018, Jason Blum said, “We’re going to cross our worlds at some point… We’re going to try.” That idea hasn’t turned into a real project yet, but Blum’s words suggest it’s still on the table.

For now, fans can look forward to the sixth Insidious movie. With a new location, new characters, and a fresh mystery, the next chapter in the franchise could be one of the most chilling yet.
