‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ Haunts the Box Office With $25.3 Million Opening
Horror franchises rarely get to celebrate a fifteen-year anniversary while still opening strong at the box office, but the ‘Insidious’ series has spent over a decade defying that usual pattern of diminishing returns. What started as a low-budget haunted house thriller back in 2010 has grown into one of the most dependable brands in modern horror, consistently turning modest budgets into reliable box office wins.
That reputation carried real weight heading into this past weekend, as the sixth installment in the franchise arrived in theaters facing stiff competition from Marvel’s still-dominant ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and Christopher Nolan’s ongoing theatrical juggernaut, ‘The Odyssey.’ Against that kind of crowded field, expectations for a franchise sequel this far removed from its original cast felt understandably modest.
‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ outperformed those expectations, launching to an estimated $25.3 million domestically over the weekend. That figure lands behind the franchise’s prior entry, 2023’s ‘The Red Door,’ which opened to $33 million, but still represents a genuinely strong result for a series many assumed might be running out of steam.
What makes that opening especially notable is the film’s production cost. ‘Out of the Further’ reportedly cost just $18 million to make, meaning it won’t need a massive turnout to comfortably turn a profit for Sony, Screen Gems, and Blumhouse. With an additional $35 million earned internationally, the film’s worldwide opening tally reached roughly $60 million against that lean budget.
That kind of return has become something of a signature move for the ‘Insidious’ brand, which has built its commercial identity around exactly this formula: modest costs, dependable horror-audience turnout, and consistent profitability regardless of how each individual entry stacks up creatively. Across all six films, the franchise has now crossed $800 million in combined lifetime worldwide grosses.
Historically, this weekend’s debut also lands as the third-largest domestic opening in the franchise to date, trailing only ‘Red Door’ and 2013’s ‘Insidious: Chapter 2,’ which opened to $40.3 million. It also continues a pattern where five of the franchise’s six films have opened above $20 million domestically, with only the original 2010 film falling short of that mark.
Critical reception for ‘Out of the Further’ has landed in familiar territory for the franchise, sitting around 58 percent on Rotten Tomatoes alongside a C+ CinemaScore, matching the grade earned by ‘The Red Door.’ Notably, though, the film reportedly earned the best audience score of any entry in the series so far, suggesting genre fans responded more favorably than critics did.
The film arrived without series mainstays Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, a shift that may have contributed to its softer numbers compared to ‘Red Door,’ which served as something of a nostalgic full-circle entry for longtime fans. Even without its most familiar faces, though, ‘Out of the Further’ still comfortably secured second place at the weekend box office behind Spider-Man’s continued dominance.

With horror once again proving itself one of the box office’s most consistent draws even during a summer dominated by superhero spectacle, ‘Insidious’ looks poised to keep expanding its increasingly tangled mythology for years to come. Whatever comes next for the franchise, this weekend made clear audiences still aren’t done stepping back into the Further.
