Fans last saw Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame, where he returned the Infinity Stones to their proper timelines and decided to stay in the 1940s with Peggy Carter.

He lived a full life there and eventually passed his shield to Sam Wilson, retiring from his role as Captain America. Since then, Steve has not appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that may change with the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Both Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell are confirmed to appear.

Atwell will reprise her role as Peggy Carter, while Evans’ exact role is still a mystery.

Evans could return as the original Captain America, a variant, or even another character entirely. Recent set photos from Avengers: Doomsday suggest he may be playing the original Captain America.

The images show a vintage farmhouse with swings, slides, bicycles, and an old green car, hinting that Steve and Peggy might have children. A source on set said, “The farmhouse had swings and slides for children,” pointing toward a new chapter in their lives.

However, some fans theorize that Steve and Peggy’s happiness may not last. By staying in the past, Steve may have triggered events that led to Doctor Doom losing his family. Now, Doom might be hunting Steve to take revenge, blaming him for the collapse of realities.

This theory fits with what the MCU has shown about incursions. Incursions can happen when time travel or multiverse travel goes wrong, sometimes destroying entire universes. A clear example is Doctor Strange.

In 2018, Strange used dreamwalking to track Thanos across the Multiverse, but this caused an incursion that destroyed another universe. Strange said to his alternate self, “Look, I’m sorry you couldn’t save your own universe, but maybe, you could help to save mine?”

In another incident, Strange traveled through the Multiverse to fight versions of himself, which caused yet another incursion.

Clea later confronted him, telling him, “You caused an incursion and we’re gonna fix it.” Kang the Conqueror also explained how his Multiversal War caused endless incursions, telling Janet van Dyne, “I saw their chaos spreading across realities. Universes colliding. Endless incursions.” These examples show that meddling with time or the multiverse can have deadly consequences.

If Avengers: Doomsday follows this pattern, Steve Rogers’ peaceful life with Peggy could be at risk. His return might not just be nostalgic, it could come with major stakes for the multiverse.
