The matter is further complicated when Ally meets Sean’s fiance Cassidy, played by Kiersey Clemons. Cassidy is outgoing, fun, exciting, and living in the moment. Those are all the things that Ally lost over time, or so she thinks. Cassidy is the epitome of living in the moment – outgoing, fun, and exciting.

This contrast with Ally’s reserved demeanor makes her realize that Cassidy is someone she used to be before she settled into her current life. The realization that she has lost some of her former self is what troubles Ally. The film starts with Ally holding back from having fun, but by the end of the movie, she may have rediscovered a fraction of her old flame.

When I was in my 20s, long before I met Dave, I was in a lot of on-again off-again relationships; we’d break up, we’d get back together, and so on. I was just fascinated by this idea of how, after you break up with someone, you might have this sort of ‘relationship amnesia,’ you know.” 

The movie was inspired by ’80 and ’90 romantic comedy movies. It also has hints of Brie’s former experiences in terms of dating. But it wasn’t based on a specific event or some fictional work. It’s an entirely original story brought to life by two talented writers and a phenomenal cast.
