Is ‘The Last Mrs. Parrish’ in Trouble? Jennifer Lopez and Robert Zemeckis Deny Reported Clash Over the Cut
Netflix has high hopes for its next star-led thriller, but ‘The Last Mrs. Parrish’ is now drawing headlines for reasons that have nothing to do with its plot. The Jennifer Lopez and Robert Zemeckis film adapts Liv Constantine’s bestselling novel, and on paper it looked like a can’t-miss pairing of a pop culture icon and an Oscar-winning filmmaker.
The project has been in the works for a while. Cameras started rolling in September 2025 in New York and New Jersey, and production wrapped a couple of days ahead of schedule in November, as Lopez confirmed on Instagram. The film’s budget is reportedly around $100 million, and a release isn’t expected until 2027.
According to a report from Page Six, things have been far less smooth since filming ended. Multiple unnamed sources claimed that Lopez, who also produces the film, had moved into the editing room. They said she pushed for changes after test screenings and clashed with Zemeckis over the final cut.
The anonymous sources described Lopez as trying to take control of the edit and seeing herself as a filmmaker. One of them claimed she was trying to save the movie. Some also said the film had tested poorly with audiences, though no test scores or screening details were made public.
The report said the pair had worked on the cut together the week before and planned to meet again. It also described the situation as resembling the much-publicized dispute over ‘It Ends With Us’, and that comparison is what made the story spread so quickly online.

The response was quick and firm. In a joint statement, Netflix, Lopez and Zemeckis called the reporting categorically false and said there was nothing to the idea that the filmmakers weren’t working in unison.
Netflix also disputed the claims about test screenings, saying the film had tested well, especially with Lopez’s fans. For now, the story pits anonymous insiders against an on-record denial from everyone involved.
The timing is notable. The report comes during a period of leadership change at Netflix: Peter Rice has just started as content chief, replacing Bela Bajaria, and film head Dan Lin has also left the company.

The comparison points back to reported creative differences on ‘It Ends With Us’, where Blake Lively reportedly approved a different cut from the one director Justin Baldoni prepared. That production later turned into a long legal battle between the two, which ended in a settlement in May 2026 with no payment.
As Parade pointed out, the comparison doesn’t mean Lopez and Zemeckis are in the same position. A star producer giving notes on an edit is common in Hollywood, and there’s no suggestion of anything beyond a creative disagreement here, which the filmmakers themselves deny.
Based on Constantine’s novel, the film is a twisty psychological thriller. Isabel May plays Amber Patterson, a con artist who sets her sights on wealthy socialite Daphne Parrish, played by Lopez, and her husband Jackson, played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

The ensemble also includes Eduardo Ramos, Pierson Fodé, Debi Mazar, Denis O’Hare and Renata Friedman. Andrea Berloff and John Gatins wrote the screenplay, and Lopez produces through Nuyorican Productions alongside Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina.
For Zemeckis, the stakes are real. World of Reel noted that his recent films, including ‘Welcome to Marwen’, ‘The Witches’, ‘Pinocchio’ and ‘Here’, haven’t connected with audiences the way his earlier hits did.
For Lopez, the film continues her run of big Netflix projects. Whatever happened behind closed doors, the final cut will determine whether this thriller is remembered for what’s on screen or for the gossip around it.
