Terraria: Here’s How To Increase the Drop Rate of Items

Some items are rarer than others in Terraria, and some are almost impossible to come by. This can be frustrating for a lot of players as their need for certain resources and rare items goes far beyond what the conventional drop rates are able to provide. Due to that, a lot of players are wondering whether there is a way to increase the drop rate of items in Terraria? Let’s see if it’s possible and, most importantly, how to do it.
Luck affects everything in Terraria
Luck is a factor in Terraria that influences rare enemies, item drops, spawns as well as almost anything in the game that depends on a random roll. To put it simply, if your chance of an item dropping is x, luck is simply one more modifier that gets added to your overall chances. Increased luck equals slightly better chances of something dropping, appearing, and spawning. Luck is not a fixed metric as it can be influenced by various factors. Most of the time, you will not be aware of your overall luck score as the metric is hidden from you.
Can luck be improved in Terraria?
Yes, your luck in Terraria can be improved, and with it, your drop chances can improve as well. Luck may affect a lot of things in Terraria, but there are some things that aren’t as well, such as:
- loot from oysters, crates, and fishing catches overall are not affected by luck
- some boss drops
- events
- Mana and health regeneration
- buff and debuffs (as they are mostly fixed and determined by other factors)
- Mechanics affected by armor, weapons, and accessories as they are fixed and influenced by other factors that can be exactly measured
How to increase the Drop Rate of Items in Terraria?
We’ve already covered the basics of improving your drop rates in Terraria. Two possible ways through which you can do that are to create an expert mode world or simply, improve your luck. It’s time to analyze both approaches in more detail.
Creating expert mode world
Expert mode increases your drop rates, for some but not all items by 50%. In some cases that number goes to a staggering 100 %. Not only does expert mode increase drop rates, but it also adds some unique drops as well.
The only downside to this approach is the fact that, generally, it is both harder and easier to acquire certain items at the same time due to enemies and the environment being harder to navigate. Before creating an expert-mode world, you should see if the trade-off is worth it at all.
Increasing your luck
Luck is not a fixed metric as it can be influenced by quite a few factors as well as items. Usually, luck can be increased through luck potions, ladybugs, NPCs, torches, events, and garden gnomes.
- Luck potions give you the “lucky” buff that increases luck based on how much time it is left. While there are several types of luck potions, the effects of different luck potions do not stack with each other. It’s important to mention that luck increases from different sources that stack together.
- Ladybugs increase your luck as well. Touching a normal ladybug grants you +0.2 luck, while a golden ladybug grants +0.4 luck. In contrast, if you harm a ladybug or use it as bait, your luck will decrease by 0.2 and 0.4, respectively.
- Interacting with NPCs increases luck as well.
- Placing certain “themed” torches in the matching biomes can increase your luck as well. Your luck will not be increased if you’re carrying a torch in the Jungle Temple or dungeons. Some torches do not provide the luck increase no matter where they are placed, for example, Colored and Ultrabright Torches.
- Events like Lantern Nights affect your luck as well. Lantern Nights increase your luck by +0.3. The great thing about this increase is that it affects you no matter where you are in the world.
- Garden gnomes can increase your luck by +0.2 as long as they are near. Placing multiple gnomes will not result in luck increased stacking. Only one will provide the effect.
And that’s pretty much it. You can increase your drop rates either by creating an expert mode world or increasing your luck. While the expert mode world offers guaranteed increased drops, it might not be for everybody. Luck is an “easier” way to increase your drop rates but it might not be as obvious as expert mode, nor as reliable. Have something to add? Let us know in the comments below!
