‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Star Bill Skarsgård Just Became the Face of Hideo Kojima’s Most Personal Project Yet

Hideo Kojima has built a career out of blurring the line between video games and cinema, recruiting Hollywood-caliber talent for projects like ‘Death Stranding’ and its sequel. That approach has only intensified as his post-Konami career has matured, with each new announcement carrying the weight of his growing reputation as gaming’s most cinematic auteur.

For months, fans have wondered what would become of ‘Physint,’ the ambitious action-espionage title Kojima has described as the culmination of his career, after Sony reportedly stepped away from the project earlier this year. Xbox swooped in to rescue it, and the uncertainty around its future finally started clearing up this week.

Bill Skarsgård has officially been cast as the lead of ‘Physint,’ with the announcement arriving during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast on September 17. The actor, best known for playing Pennywise in the ‘It’ franchise and Count Orlok in ‘Nosferatu,’ will take on the role of the game’s protagonist and player character.

Kojima appeared in person at the event to share the news himself, framing the casting as something built on mutual admiration rather than a standard industry deal. “I’m delighted to confirm the lead role for ‘Physint’ will be Bill Skarsgård,” Kojima said in a press release published via Xbox. “We are both long-time fans of each other’s work, and we’ve decided to embark on this new adventure together.”

According to that same statement, Kojima said the costume fittings, scans, and camera tests conducted with Skarsgård and co-star Charlee Fraser earlier this year gave him “tremendous confidence in the direction of the project.” A new poster released alongside the announcement, shot personally by Kojima, offered fans their first proper look at Skarsgård in character.

Skarsgård now joins an ensemble that was first revealed during Kojima Productions’ 10th anniversary event, Beyond the Strand, in Tokyo back in September 2025. That cast already includes Charlee Fraser of ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,’ Don Lee of ‘Train to Busan,’ and Minami Hamabe of ‘Godzilla Minus One.’

Kojima made clear the roster is not finished, noting that casting, talent scans, and collaborations with outside creators are still ongoing, with more names expected to be revealed down the line. It is a familiar strategy for the director, who has leaned on recognizable faces to anchor the emotional core of his last several projects.

‘Physint’ has not had a smooth journey to this point. The project was reportedly dropped by PlayStation earlier this year before Xbox stepped in as its new publishing partner just weeks before this casting reveal, adding it to a growing slate that already includes Kojima Productions’ horror title ‘OD – Knock.’

Despite the publisher shakeup, Kojima struck an optimistic tone at Tokyo Game Show, telling the audience the project “continues to make steady progress.” No gameplay footage or story details were shown, and the game’s title remains provisional, but Kojima has previously described it as unbound by any existing genre in digital entertainment.

For Skarsgård, the role adds to a resume that already spans horror, action, and prestige drama, including recent work on HBO’s ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ and Gus Van Sant’s ‘Dead Man’s Wire.’ Pairing him with one of gaming’s most idiosyncratic storytellers only raises the intrigue around what ‘Physint’ is actually building toward.
