The GLAMOUR Women of the Year Awards are set to honour nine of the UK’s most prominent trans voices this year, highlighting their impact amid rising political tensions in the country.

Munroe Bergdorf, Maxine Heron, Taira, Munya, Bel Priestly, Dani St James, Ceval Omar, Mya Mehmi, and Shon Faye appeared together on the cover of the magazine to mark the occasion and celebrate the viral Protect the Dolls T-shirt campaign.

GLAMOUR said the decision to highlight these trans voices comes at a critical time, as debates over single-s** spaces, the CASS review, and other legal rulings continue to shape public discourse.

The magazine stressed the importance of amplifying voices affected by anti-trans legislation and political pressure in the UK.

In response to the magazine’s cover, J.K. Rowling took to X, formerly Twitter, to express her opinion on the current messaging in mainstream women’s publications. She wrote, “I grew up in an era when mainstream women’s magazines told girls they needed to be thinner and prettier. Now mainstream women’s magazines tell girls that men are better women than they are.”

Rowling’s comment adds to her long history of controversial statements on transgender issues. Over the years, the Harry Potter author has faced criticism for tweets and essays suggesting that transgender women are not real women, sparking widespread debate and backlash from LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, fans, and some members of the media.

Her previous remarks have led to calls for boycotts of her work and public statements from actors and collaborators associated with her projects.

The GLAMOUR Women of the Year Awards continue to celebrate influential women and non-binary individuals, but Rowling’s remarks serve as a reminder of the ongoing tension in public conversations around gender identity and representation in media.

This situation highlights how divided opinions on gender identity remain, especially when mainstream figures weigh in. While the magazine seeks to uplift trans voices, Rowling’s comments show how influential voices can ignite controversy and debate.
