J.K. Rowling Sparks Controversy with AI Post, Fans Blame Black Mold
J.K. Rowling is once again making headlines on social media, but this time for a post that left many people confused rather than angry. The Harry Potter author and frequent X user shared a video that combined a controversial tweet with AI-generated images, prompting new online jokes and speculation.
Tell me again how gender identity ideology isn’t homophobic. Would you trust this UK doctor, who was suspended from practicing by the medical council and now heads up quasi-medical trans advocacy group GenderGP, to be sympathetic to a young girl who’s attracted to other girls? pic.twitter.com/yDRZL6DrcL

In her September 8 post on X, Rowling claimed that “gender ideology” is homophobic. She included a short six-second video showing a tweet from Dr. Helen Webberley. The tweet read, “Have you noticed that the only argument they have is that if you have a willy, you must be a man. I wonder whether an absolute fear of willies is what drives them? Phallophobes need help, bless them, cos some people find willies wealy wealy scarwy.”
After a few seconds, the tweet in the video was replaced by images that appear to be created by AI. These images looked like social media comment sections but contained no readable words, just jumbled letters and distorted symbols.
The video also included a sound resembling typing on a phone. Many viewers were left scratching their heads, unsure what Rowling was trying to communicate.

Rowling has become more famous in recent years for her anti-trans posts than for her novels. Her comments continue to divide fans and draw criticism, but this post generated a different kind of reaction: confusion and even humor.
The internet has also revisited a long-running joke about Rowling’s X profile picture, which was noticed in 2024 for what appeared to be black mold growing on the wall behind her. Some users jokingly suggested that the mold might explain her shift from beloved author to outspoken social media activist. “Sorry but is that black mould growing up the walls of her house? Is that why she’s the way she is.”
Others chimed in with similar humor. “Jk rowling’s profile picture revealing visible black mold that is apparently growing up her walls is probably the greatest Chekhov’s gun of all time,” wrote @MNateShyamalan. Following the latest AI post, the mold jokes resurfaced, with people once again speculating about the mysterious background in her profile picture.
