J.K. Rowling has publicly shared her excitement about the upcoming Harry Potter reboot, even as the show faces intense backlash from fans. The series, which is set to premiere on Max in May, recently released its first trailer, sparking both anticipation and controversy.

Rowling took to X to express her support for the project, writing, “It’s going to be incredible. I’m so happy with it.” The reboot introduces a completely new cast to play the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley.

Not everyone has welcomed the new actors, however. Paapa Essiedu, the Ghanaian-English actor cast as Severus Snape, revealed he has been the target of serious online harassment since his casting was announced. Snape was originally played by Alan Rickman in the films. Essiedu told The Times on March 21, “I’ve been told, ‘Quit, or I’ll m***** you.’ The reality is that if I look at Instagram, I will see somebody saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and k*** you.’”

Network executives were prepared for the backlash. Casey Bloys, a network executive, told Variety, “With all actors on any kind of big IP shows — and this is obviously one of those where you’ve got passionate fans, people with a lot of opinions — it can get scary in places.” He added that the set has implemented strict safety measures, including a security team and social media training, to protect the cast.

Essiedu admitted that the threats have affected him emotionally. “While I hope I’ll be okay, nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job. Many people put their lives on the line in their work. I’m playing a wizard in ‘Harry Potter.’ And I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t affect me emotionally.” He also said he has not reported the threats, noting, “I don’t think some 17-year-old boy being put in jail for two weeks for threatening to m**** me would actually make me feel any better.”

The new Harry Potter series has been a lightning rod for fan debate. While Rowling’s endorsement has reassured some followers, the intense online attacks on Essiedu show that not all fans are ready to embrace the reboot.

It’s unfortunate that actors face such extreme threats just for taking on roles. The focus should be on their talent and the story, not their personal safety. What do you think about the backlash surrounding the Harry Potter reboot? Share your thoughts in the comments.
