J.K. Simmons Just Killed The J. Jonah Jameson Rumors For ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Anticipation for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has been building for months, with Marvel Studios promising a version of Peter Parker that fans have never quite seen before. The film follows Peter fighting crime full time as Spider-Man in a world that no longer remembers him, even as his old friends move on without him. With Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo all set to appear, and Destin Daniel Cretton directing from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, the cast list alone has kept the rumor mill running overtime.
One name has haunted that speculation for years, J.K. Simmons. Simmons first brought J. Jonah Jameson to life back in 2002’s ‘Spider-Man,’ becoming one of the most beloved supporting players in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, and Marvel later brought him back for a surprise cameo in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ before he reprised the role again in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’ That track record made him feel like a lock for any future appearance, and reports from industry scoopers only fueled that belief.
As it turns out, none of that speculation panned out. Speaking with ComicBook.com to promote his new MGM+ series ‘The Westies,’ Simmons was blunt about his absence from the new film, telling the outlet, “I don’t know who on the internet decided that that was fact, but I ain’t in it.”
The comment directly contradicts a wave of insider chatter that had picked up steam earlier this year. A scooper known as Alex Perez had claimed that Simmons would indeed be reprising the role in ‘Brand New Day,’ even suggesting Angourie Rice’s Betty Brant could be tied to the Daily Bugle storyline. Other reports pointed to a similar conclusion, with claims that Simmons would make his third MCU appearance after ‘Far From Home’ and ‘No Way Home.’
So why leave Jameson out entirely? The character has mostly functioned as a bit player in the MCU’s version of the story, never really factoring into Peter’s personal arc beyond exposing his secret identity, unlike Raimi’s films where Jameson was Peter’s actual boss at the Daily Bugle. With Peter’s emotional unraveling, Hulk, Punisher, Sadie Sink’s mystery role and a wave of Marvel villains already competing for screen time, squeezing in Jameson may have felt like one storyline too many.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the door is shut for good. With ‘Brand New Day’ shaping up to be one of the year’s biggest box office draws and the Spider-Man franchise showing no signs of slowing down, there’s still a chance Jameson could resurface if the character finds his footing in a future installment. For now, though, fans hoping to hear Simmons rant about a “masked menace” one more time this summer will have to wait. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ swings into theaters on July 31.
