James Blunt Denies Any Connection to Hayden Panettiere’s Yacht Story After Old Photo Resurfaces

A 2009 photo of Hayden Panettiere and James Blunt together on a yacht in France has resurfaced online in the days following Panettiere’s death on August 16, reigniting a piece of internet speculation that singer James Blunt says has nothing to do with him.

The renewed attention traces back to Panettiere’s memoir, ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning,’ released May 19. In it, she wrote that at age 18, an industry acquaintance she identified as Stella McAmis led her onto a yacht and encouraged her to get into bed with a British singer-songwriter in his thirties, whom she did not name. Panettiere described the man as shirtless and propped against pillows, and said she fled the room, frightened, shortly after.

Since the book’s release, online sleuths have circulated photos of Panettiere and Blunt together at the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS after-party in Cannes on May 21, 2009, along with a separate image of the pair aboard a boat the following day, treating the pictures as evidence Blunt was the man Panettiere described. Blunt has now directly pushed back on that theory.

The British singer shared a Substack article on X written by journalist Dean Piper, titled “Hayden Panettiere and James Blunt – An Internet Lynching,” which lays out why the theory doesn’t hold up. Piper, who covered the 2009 Cannes event at the time, wrote that Panettiere and Blunt “arrived together, had been flirty throughout and had gone to the afterparty together,” and were “photographed on a boat the next day, smiling and having fun.”

The key issue, according to Piper, is Panettiere’s age at the time the photos were taken. “Guys, it only takes the smallest of AI searches to find out that in May 2009, when the pictures of Blunt and Panettiere were taken, she was 19, almost 20,” Piper wrote in the Substack article Blunt shared on X. “So, if the incident happened when she was 18, Blunt’s not your guy to start with.” Piper also noted that Panettiere’s account describes fleeing the yacht cabin and avoiding the man afterward, which he argues doesn’t square with her and Blunt being photographed together, smiling, on the same boat the very next day.

Blunt has not addressed the allegations in his own words beyond sharing Piper’s article with an eyes emoji, a post he briefly deleted before reposting. Representatives for Diana Jenkins, another figure fans had separately speculated about in connection with the story, have also publicly denied any involvement, with a rep telling TMZ that anyone repeating the claim about her “will be sued.

Panettiere first discussed the yacht encounter publicly while promoting her memoir before detailing it further in the book itself. She has not named the man involved, and no verified evidence has emerged connecting the account to any specific individual. Panettiere was found unresponsive at a South Carolina Airbnb on August 16, where she had been staying with her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson; her death remains under investigation, with no official cause yet announced.

Given how quickly unverified theories have spread following renewed attention to Panettiere’s story, both Piper’s reporting and Blunt’s own response point toward the same conclusion: the timeline simply doesn’t support the claim, regardless of how widely the photos have circulated.
