Legendary filmmaker James Cameron has shared that he nearly directed the iconic 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park, but Steven Spielberg ultimately took the helm.

Cameron, known for hits like Titanic, Avatar, and Terminator 2, explained that he had attempted to secure the rights to Michael Crichton’s novel but Spielberg beat him by just a few hours.

“He was the right guy to make it. Not me, because I would have made it too terrifying and R-rated. It would have been Aliens with dinosaurs” Cameron said to Empire.

This is not exactly news as Cameron commented this in the past as well.

Cameron previously said he realized Spielberg was the right choice for the film. “I tried to buy the book rights and he beat me to it by a few hours. But when I saw the film, I realised that I was not the right person to make the film, he was. Because he made a dinosaur movie for kids, and mine would have been aliens with dinosaurs, and that wouldn’t have been fair,” he said.

Cameron added that his version would have been much darker. “Dinosaurs are for 8-year-olds. We can all enjoy it, too, but kids get dinosaurs and they should not have been excluded for that. His sensibility was right for that film, I’d have gone further, nastier, much nastier,” he said.

Jurassic Park has since become one of the most celebrated and influential films in cinema history. It has been recognized by the American Film Institute, Empire Magazine, The Guardian, and Entertainment Weekly for its thrilling and groundbreaking impact. In 2018, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

Cameron’s admission offers a fascinating “what if” moment in movie history. His darker vision of Jurassic Park would have been a very different experience, likely skewed toward an intense, R-rated adventure rather than the family-friendly blockbuster Spielberg delivered.

It’s interesting to think how film history could have changed if Cameron had directed Jurassic Park. Do you think it would have been better or worse? Share your thoughts in the comments.
