James Cameron Shares How Long ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Will Be
James Cameron has shared new details about his upcoming film Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in the Avatar series.
The movie follows 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water and will hit theaters in the United States on December 19, 2025.
Cameron, who co-wrote the script with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, confirmed that the film will run around three hours. “And we’re at three hours, big surprise! But it works beautifully, and the actors were super-excited about that idea. It’s like, oh, okay, that feels right, you know?” he told Variety.
He also noted that he has been reviewing the film to maintain consistency in music and how it underscores dialogue scenes. “So I have rewatched it. It’s a pretty good ride, I have to say!”
The movie has been a long time in the making. Cameron first expressed interest in sequels back in 2006, and plans for multiple follow-ups were announced in 2010. Filming for Fire and Ash began in New Zealand in September 2017 and wrapped in December 2020, overlapping with production on The Way of Water. The film has faced several delays, but production is now complete, and visual effects work has been finishing over the past two years.
This world is much deeper than you imagine. Watch the brand-new trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash and experience it in theatres December 19th.
