James Gunn Admits on Working To Bring Popular DCEU Character into the New DC Universe
Fans are wondering if Margot Robbie will return as Harley Quinn in James Gunn’s new DC universe, or if the character’s time has ended. Gunn, who is now co-head of DC Studios with Peter Safran, has been busy reshaping the DC on-screen world. The new slate kicked off with last month’s Superman movie, written and directed by Gunn.
Now, the universe features a new Superman played by David Corenswet, a corporate-style Justice Gang instead of the classic Justice League, and still-to-be-cast versions of Wonder Woman and Batman, though Robert Pattinson will return as Batman in The Batman Part II.
So what about Harley Quinn? Will Robbie return to reprise her role? Gunn told Entertainment Weekly, “That will be revealed down the line.” He didn’t give more details but did share that he’s looking to bring back another Suicide Squad member.
“I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out. So we’ll see what happens,” Gunn said, referring to Idris Elba’s mercenary from The Suicide Squad (2021).
Bloodsport, whose real name is Robert DuBois, is an assassin armed with advanced weapons. In the film, he was hired to kill Superman using a kryptonite bullet but failed. He was then arrested and sent to Belle Reve, where he joined Task Force X.
Bloodsport eventually became a key member and briefly led the team on the Corto Maltese mission. During this time, he built a strong bond with Ratcatcher 2, helped defeat Starro, clashed with Peacemaker after Peacemaker killed Rick Flag, and even managed to blackmail Amanda Waller into letting him and his team go free after proving his leadership skills.
Fans have noticed that Gunn seems particularly interested in exploring Bloodsport’s story in this new DC era. While there’s no official word on Harley Quinn yet, the fact that Gunn is actively thinking about which DCEU characters to bring back shows that some familiar faces might return. With his track record of mixing established heroes with fresh storytelling, there’s hope that both Bloodsport and perhaps Harley Quinn could have a place in the evolving DC universe.
