James Gunn and Peter Safran Might Lose DC Studios Control if Paramount Acquires Warner Bros., Reports Say
James Gunn and Peter Safran might not keep full control over DC Studios if Paramount Skydance ends up buying Warner Bros.
According to a report from Puck, Paramount, now owned by David Ellison, may already be planning its own projects for the DC Universe. One project under discussion involves Weapons director Zach Cregger, who has reportedly been in talks with Paramount Pictures co-chair Josh Greenstein.
Gunn and Safran were given the chance to lead DC Studios after Gunn’s success with Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad. Their goal has been to build a connected cinematic universe.
This includes not just big names like Superman and Batman but also lesser-known characters like Booster Gold and the Creature Commandos.
For now, any changes from a Paramount takeover are still hypothetical. Netflix has also shown interest in acquiring Warner Bros, adding more uncertainty to the DC Universe’s future.
Paramount’s interest in Cregger is partly due to the success of Weapons, which earned $268 million worldwide. Cregger is also set to direct the next Resident Evil film and a Weapons prequel featuring the character Aunt Gladys.
He has shown interest in the DC Universe as well. Cregger once wrote a horror script set in the DC world, though it didn’t include any superheroes. He later clarified that he hadn’t spoken with Gunn, but it highlighted his interest in the franchise.
If Paramount Skydance takes control, Gunn and Safran could see their creative freedom limited. They have built a strong start to the DC Universe, but new ownership could bring big changes.
