James Gunn Confirms Four-Film Plan for New ‘Superman’ Saga
James Gunn is already thinking about the future of Superman in the new DC Universe. After the big success of the 2025 movie, Gunn confirmed that a sequel is coming—and it won’t just be about Superman alone.
The first movie kicked off the brand-new DC Universe and gave fans a fresh take on the Man of Steel. It starred David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
The story showed Superman stopping a global threat created by Luthor, but his actions made some people question whether they could trust him. Fans loved the mix of classic Superman themes with a modern twist, and the movie became both a critical and commercial hit.
Fans have been wondering how far this new Superman story will go. In a recent interview, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn revealed the long-term plan. “What is the long-term story I’m telling here? What is the story that I’m gonna tell about Superman over four movies?” he said.

That’s right—Gunn is planning four Superman films in total. The second movie is already moving forward. In an interview with Deadline, reported by The Playlist, Gunn said the treatment for the sequel is finished.
He also hinted that the story will include other characters, not just Superman. “It’s within the group of characters we’ve already met, and Superman’s an important element of it. So, that’s what I’ll say, but like that movie, that treatment is done,” Gunn explained.
This suggests the sequel could be more of a team-up story rather than a solo Superman adventure. It fits with what Warner Bros. Discovery head David Zaslav said about the next film being part of a larger “Super-Family” franchise. With a Supergirl solo movie already planned for next year, she might play a big role in the new story.
Gunn is already writing the sequel, but he hasn’t revealed details about the plot or which other heroes will appear. Still, having the treatment ready shows the project is moving fast. The first movie already introduced several key characters tied to Clark Kent, and the plan for the DC Universe includes bigger names like Supergirl and members of the Justice League.
