Mystery boxes have become something of a signature move for James Gunn’s DC Universe, with the studio head consistently teasing answers without giving away specifics too early. That approach has kept fans obsessively parsing every trailer frame and social media reply for clues about where the connected universe is headed next.

That pattern continued this week around one of the more puzzling details from HBO’s newest DC series. Fans have been fixated on a specific visual detail involving Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, wondering how his Green Lantern ring situation actually connects to the show’s central mystery.

James Gunn confirmed that the mystery over which ring Guy Gardner has in ‘Lanterns‘ will eventually be explained, responding simply that all will be answered when a fan raised the question on Threads. Gunn’s reply came after a fan noted they didn’t know much about Green Lanterns and asked whether Guy Gardner was wearing Hal Jordan’s ring or whether there were multiple rings on Earth.

That question carries real weight given how the series’ premiere actually unfolded. ‘Lanterns’ opened with a bombshell reveal, showing Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan dead in the present timeline, apparently from a gunshot wound, with his Green Lantern ring notably missing from the scene entirely.

Chandler himself has spoken about the significance of that opening twist, telling Deadline that Hal’s fate effectively opens up the whole mystery of the show. With the ring nowhere to be found following his death, fans have naturally started connecting the dots toward Guy Gardner, who was notably absent from the series premiere despite his confirmed casting.

‘Lanterns’ co-creator Tom King has previously indicated that the ring eventually passes to Guy, which would give Fillion’s eventual appearance a direct tie to the mystery introduced in that very first episode. That detail makes Gunn’s decision to publicly confirm answers are coming feel especially significant, rather than just a vague tease meant to placate curious fans.

Gunn’s affection for the character adds another interesting wrinkle to the situation. Hours after addressing the ring question, Gunn was also asked to name his favorite Green Lantern across the character’s entire history, and he chose Guy Gardner specifically, further fueling speculation about how prominent a role the character will ultimately play.

Fillion first debuted as Guy Gardner in this year’s ‘Superman’ film, directed by Gunn, before being confirmed to reprise the role for ‘Lanterns’ as well. Interestingly, in the earliest stages of the show’s development, Guy Gardner was originally planned to be one of the series’ starring characters before the focus shifted toward John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, and Hal Jordan instead.

‘Lanterns’ follows John Stewart and Hal Jordan as two intergalactic space cops investigating a dark, Earth-based murder mystery in the American heartland, with ripple effects that extend across the broader DC Universe. The series also features Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Ulrich Thomsen, and Jason Ritter in supporting roles, rounding out a cast built around the show’s grounded, mystery-driven tone.

Given how deliberately Gunn has been teasing this specific plot thread, it seems likely that Guy Gardner’s eventual arrival will directly tie into unraveling what actually happened to Hal Jordan and his missing ring. For now, fans will have to keep watching closely as the season continues, trusting Gunn’s promise that every piece of this particular puzzle is coming together as planned.

What do you think the mystery of Guy Gardner's ring in Lanterns will reveal?
