James Gunn Drops Massive Update on Next ‘Superman’ Project
James Gunn is keeping the Superman hype alive after the huge success of his latest movie. Released just a few weeks ago, Superman has been both a box office hit and a fan favorite.
David Corenswet suits up as Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult taking on the role of Lex Luthor. The film also features plenty of other heroes and villains from the DC Universe.
This Superman story isn’t about how Clark Kent became the hero we know, but it does set up a bigger DC Universe. In the movie, Superman faces the fallout of stepping into an international crisis caused by billionaire mastermind Lex Luthor.
Public opinion turns against him, and he has to win back trust with help from Lois and his superhero allies. The world in this film already has magic, monsters, reality-bending tech, and plenty of costumed heroes, hinting at what’s to come.
Before the movie even hit theaters, Gunn had already confirmed there were more stories planned. Back in June 2025, he revealed he was writing another Superman story. It wouldn’t be a direct sequel but would still have the Man of Steel front and center. Corenswet and Brosnahan have contracts for potential sequels, but Warner Bros. wasn’t expected to announce one right away.
That changed in August when Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed Gunn was working on the next film in what’s being called the “Super-Family.” Gunn later said he had finished writing a detailed script treatment for the project. He called it “the next story in the Superman Saga” and made it clear production could start soon.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter during the Peacemaker Season 2 premiere in New York, Gunn gave another update. “I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga.’ The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked out treatment. I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”

Superman’s success might also lead to new spin-offs for television. According to reports from July 2025, Gunn has been thinking about series centered on supporting characters from the film.
Names mentioned include Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific and Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen. Journalist Jeff Sneider even reported that Gisondo is expected to lead a Jimmy Olsen series for HBO Max. This show could also bring in the classic DC villain Gorilla Grodd, marking his first appearance in Gunn’s DC Universe.
For now, fans are still celebrating Superman’s win at the box office, but Gunn is already looking ahead. With the “Superman Saga” continuing, and new shows possibly on the way, it looks like the DCU has no plans to slow down anytime soon.
