James Gunn Fires Back at 'Lanterns' Criticism and Teases Hal Jordan’s Fate

DC Studios has spent much of the last few years walking a tightrope between honoring decades of comic book history and forging something genuinely new for the screen. That balancing act has rarely been more visible than with ‘Lanterns,’ the HBO series that’s been generating both excitement and controversy since its earliest trailers dropped.

Fans of Hal Jordan have been particularly vocal, watching closely as the show reimagines the iconic Green Lantern in ways that don’t always match the character they grew up reading. That’s exactly what happened this week when DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn addressed complaints that ‘Lanterns’ disrespects Hal Jordan, pushing back firmly against critics while dropping a tantalizing hint that the character’s apparent fate might not be as final as it seems.

The exchange began when a fan argued that the show should “at least respect the characters that made the comics popular,” accusing the series of killing Hal off right after waiting years to see him back on screen. “We more than respect him. We love him, despite his imperfections,” Gunn continued. “Us knowing the time of his death, if that’s exactly what that is, is absolutely not the same thing as killing him off right away.”

Gunn also pushed back on a broader complaint that ‘Lanterns’ isn’t a faithful comics adaptation, arguing that television doesn’t need to treat the source material as untouchable scripture.
