It looks like Superman will be flying back to the big screen sooner than expected. James Gunn has all but confirmed that a sequel is on the way.

The news came directly from Gunn on Threads. When a fan asked what he was working on now that Superman promotion is over, Gunn replied, “Peacemaker press!! And sequel writing!!!” Another fan quickly followed up, asking, “WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO TEASE THE SEQUEL,” and Gunn answered, “I JUST DID!”

While Gunn didn’t name the project, it’s hard to believe he’s talking about anything other than Superman 2. The film has been a big success at the box office and has received strong reviews from critics and fans.

The surprising part is that Gunn didn’t seem interested in a traditional sequel before. When someone previously asked him about Superman 2, he answered, “Define Superman 2.” Now it seems plans have changed, or maybe he was just keeping things quiet until the right time.

The 2025 Superman movie, directed and written by Gunn, rebooted the Man of Steel for the new DC Universe. David Corenswet took on the role of Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The story followed Superman dealing with the fallout from stopping an international crisis, which forced him to regain public trust.

Filming took place across Norway, Georgia, and Ohio before wrapping in July 2024. The movie opened in July 2025 and quickly became a hit, earning over $500 million worldwide. Critics praised it for its bright, hopeful tone and strong performances, even if some felt it packed in too much.

With Gunn now teasing that he’s already writing a sequel, it seems clear that the Man of Steel’s story is far from over. Fans will just have to wait for him to share more details, but the cape is definitely coming back.
