James Gunn Offers Update on the Future of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 3
James Gunn has revealed new details about Peacemaker’s second season and the future of the series. Episode 6, titled “Ignorance Is Chris,” surprised fans with major twists, including the shocking reveal that John Cena’s character has been moving through a world controlled by Nazis.
The episode also featured a huge cameo: Nicholas Hoult appearing as Lex Luthor.
Another key moment saw Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. making a deal at Belle Reve prison, something Gunn later described as “a really important moment for the entire DCU” during Peacemaker: The Official Podcast With James Gunn.
After the episode aired, Gunn spoke with Collider about what fans can expect. While he didn’t confirm a third season, he said the story isn’t over. “It is not right now. I think that people should—that doesn’t mean there aren’t plans for these characters, but it’s not necessarily Season 3 of Peacemaker.”
“And then people should watch Episode 8 to see what happens, because maybe some of your questions will be answered in that episode by itself.”
Gunn also addressed why the new season placed Chris Smith in such a dark alternate world. He said the storyline was partly inspired by Philip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle and was used to show Chris’ struggles with his past.
According to Gunn, the character longs for a reality where he is accepted, his family is alive, and his father treats him kindly. But as Gunn put it, “the price in this case is Nazi America. That’s what the price of all this happiness was on the show.”
Peacemaker Season 2 has had a long road to release. It was first announced in 2022, but production was delayed when Gunn became co-CEO of DC Studios and shifted focus to Superman.
The Waller spin-off was planned next, but the Hollywood strikes pushed it back, allowing Peacemaker to move forward. Filming eventually started in 2024, taking place alongside Superman at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, and wrapped later that year.
The new season debuted on HBO Max on August 21. It will run for eight episodes and has already been praised by critics, with many saying it’s stronger than the first season. Alongside Cena, the cast includes Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, Frank Grillo, and Robert Patrick.
While Season 3 isn’t officially in development, Gunn has made it clear the characters will continue to play a role in the DCU in some form.
Peacemaker continues to surprise, both with bold story choices and unexpected cameos. Whether or not Season 3 happens, it’s clear these characters will stick around in the DCU. What do you think? Should Peacemaker get another full season, or should the story move into other DC projects? Share your thoughts in the comments.
