James Gunn On Why You Can’t Miss Peacemaker Season 2 If You Want to Understand the DCU’s Future

James Gunn and John Cena recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of Peacemaker Season 2 in New York, and they made it clear that this new season is a major piece of the DC Universe puzzle.

Gunn explained just how important it is for fans to watch. “It’s a big part, definitely Superman leads directly into Peacemaker; it should be noted that this is for adults, not for children, but Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, it’s incredibly important,” he said. “Lots of guest stars coming up, lots of characters that are showing up that we’ve already met in Superman. I don’t think there’s anything that I’ve ever done that I love more than this season of Peacemaker, so I’m so excited for people to see it.”

John Cena added that the second season focuses on connecting the whole DCU. “This season is about furthering the narrative. Instead of standalone properties, all of the DCU is now connected, as you saw Peacemaker show up in Superman. I think what you see in season two is just a forward of that narrative. That whole DCU through line—it takes the 11th Street Kids through their next adventure, but it also has a lot to do with the DCU going forward,” Cena told THR.

This isn’t the first time Gunn has emphasized Peacemaker’s role in the DCU. At first, he said that Season 1 would not be canon to the DCU and that its transition from the DCEU would be smooth. Later, he changed his mind, confirming that almost all of Season 1 is canon, except for the Justice League scene, which the show will address.

Gunn has been using creative multiversal storytelling to build the future of the DCU. He recently told reporters that Peacemaker will guide fans on what’s coming next in the universe. “Yeah, and it’s not what anyone thinks. It’s not what anyone would guess. But I think if people watch the next season of Peacemaker, they’ll see where a lot of these things are going and have a little bit more of a sense of maybe what can happen,” Gunn said.

With returning characters from Superman, guest appearances, and a bigger focus on the DCU’s interconnected stories, this season of Peacemaker promises to be essential viewing.

Gunn’s excitement is clear, and Cena’s reassurance confirms that Season 2 is key for anyone looking to understand the next phase of the DC Universe. Fans can expect surprises, action, and a deeper dive into how all the DC heroes and stories are linked together.
