The DC Universe is basically starting fresh, leaving behind the old DCEU stories and characters. But James Gunn, who’s now in charge, says he still hasn’t decided what to do with Jason Momoa’s Aquaman movies.

Gunn talked about this on Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, which came out just before Peacemaker Season 2 premieres on August 21st.

In the podcast, Gunn mentioned a scene from Peacemaker Season 1 that referenced Aquaman. He said there might be a chance Aquaman’s movie becomes part of the DCU canon, but he doesn’t really believe it will.

Gunn said, “Is Aquaman canon? We don’t know, but I don’t think Aquaman is canon.” He also explained that if Aquaman stays in the DCU, the timeline might have to change because “It’s unlikely that Aquaman is a famous hero in the DCU as Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 is happening.”

Shortly after the podcast launched, it was removed from most major platforms, and it’s unclear if it will return. Gunn was using the podcast to explain the connections and canon of the new DC Universe, especially around Peacemaker.

While the DCU has started new stories with shows like Creature Commandos and Superman, Peacemaker has to deal with DC’s history of many reboots.

Aquaman was the biggest hit in the old DCEU, so it makes sense Warner Bros. might want to continue that story. But the second movie didn’t do as well, and the new DCU world, where metahumans have been known for 300 years, doesn’t really fit with Aquaman’s original story. In this new setting, Aquaman’s arrival wouldn’t have the same impact.

There’s also the fact that Jason Momoa will appear next year in the DCU as Lobo, an intergalactic bounty hunter, in Supergirl. Even if he looked different enough to play both roles, it would be a lot of work for him since he already has other projects planned.
