James Gunn Reveals He Discussed a Deadpool Cameo with Ryan Reynolds for Peacemaker
The Peacemaker Season 2 finale, titled Full Nelson, has arrived, and James Gunn is already sharing some fun behind-the-scenes details, including one surprise that didn’t make it to the screen.
During a recent virtual press conference, Gunn revealed that he once talked to Ryan Reynolds about having Deadpool appear in the show.
The idea came up while discussing the many alternate universes shown in the episode, thanks to Peacemaker’s Quantum Unfolding Chamber. Gunn said he wanted one of the doors to open and reveal Deadpool inside.
He laughed as he told the story, saying, “Yeah, I wanted them to open the door and see Deadpool in a room. And I talked to Ryan Reynolds about it, but I think we would’ve had to go through some pretty big hoops to do that! He wanted to do it.”
The cameo didn’t happen, of course, and for good reason. Deadpool is part of the Marvel universe, while Peacemaker exists in DC’s world.
A crossover like that would mean connecting the MCU and DCU, something that would take a mountain of legal agreements between studios. Still, the fact that both Gunn and Reynolds were open to the idea makes it a fun “what if” moment for fans.
Gunn joked afterward that his comment would probably take over the internet, adding, “That’s all anybody’s going to talk about now. Is f**** Deadpool in the other room? I should have never said it!”
Even though the crossover didn’t happen, the thought of Deadpool briefly showing up in Peacemaker is exactly the kind of wild, self-aware moment fans would expect from both characters.
This story perfectly shows how much fun James Gunn has when creating his shows. A Deadpool cameo would have been impossible legally, but it also would have been hilarious.
It’s a reminder that even though Marvel and DC are separate worlds, the creators behind them still dream about the same crossovers we do. What do you think — would you want to see Deadpool appear in the DCU someday? Share your thoughts in the comments.
