James Gunn Reveals Who He Considers the “Best Bit of Casting” He Has Ever Done in His Life
James Gunn is currently leading DC Studios as co-CEO and is already shaping the future of the DC Universe. After the success of Superman, Gunn has several projects in the works.
He wrote a seven-episode animated series called Creature Commandos, based on the DC comic team, and is also involved in Waller, a spin-off of Peacemaker focusing on Amanda Waller. Gunn is also producing the upcoming Supergirl film, set for release in 2026.
Gunn has also spoken about casting Milly Alcock as Supergirl in the DC Universe. On The Howard Stern Show, he said, “Milly Alcock might be the best bit of casting I’ve done in my entire life. I think she’s absolutely stunning in the movie.” Alcock already made her DCU debut in a cameo during Superman.
Milly Alcock is widely known for her role as young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon. Critics praised her performance, with critics calling her “the shining star of House of the Dragon’s opening episodes… a simple squinting of the eyes or a pursing of the lips can betray the range of emotions that accompany king’s court politics.” Alcock also received a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
The upcoming Supergirl film, directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, stars Alcock as Kara Zor-El alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham.
The story follows Supergirl as she travels across the galaxy on a quest for revenge. Gunn and Peter Safran are producing the movie as part of DC Studios’ Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
Plans for a Supergirl film began in 2018 under the DC Extended Universe. The character was first introduced in the 2023 film The Flash, portrayed by Sasha Calle. When Gunn and Safran became co-CEOs in 2022, they reshaped the project, announcing a new adaptation in January 2023 inspired by the comic book miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Filming took place from January to May in England and Scotland, and the subtitle was later dropped.
Supergirl is scheduled for release by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States on June 26, 2026.
