James Gunn, the creator of Peacemaker, recently explained why he isn’t going back to change Season 1 despite the new Justice League retcon.

In a recent interview with TV Insider, Gunn confirmed that updating the previous season would be far too expensive. “I would have to change too many things throughout Season 1, it would cost too much money, and I’d rather just give that money to a few more CGI shots in Supergirl,” he said.

He added, “We say canon is really Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker Season 2. I love for people to watch Season 1, but obviously… we’re not gonna go back and reshoot all of it… at least not at this point.” Gunn also admitted, “At some point, I would love to Lucas the s**t out of it, but right now I don’t have the money.”

The first episode of Peacemaker Season 2 included a sizzle reel recapping Season 1, showing a big change: the Snyderverse Justice League was replaced by DC’s newly canon Justice Gang, which features Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), alongside the new Superman, David Corenswet, and Supergirl, Milly Alcock.

Gunn’s comments clarify that while the retcon is acknowledged, the original Season 1 footage will remain unchanged for now.

Gunn explained that Season 2 is less about chaos and more about Christopher Smith, played by John Cena, confronting personal loss. “This is not about the craziness, this is about Christopher Smith confronting the loss of the thing he never had, which is a brother, an adult that he could grow old with, and a father who loves him… and seeing what life would be like,” Gunn said.

The show opens with Chris following his pet bird, Eagly, through his late father’s dimensional portal, leading him to an alternate world where his father Auggie and brother Keith are alive. This sets up emotional and high-stakes storylines, including Chris finally meeting an adult Keith.

Gunn’s explanation emphasizes that the retcon was carefully integrated without requiring costly reshoots of Season 1.

He sees the new timeline as part of the ongoing story rather than a full rewrite. While he would love to fully remake Season 1 in the future, budget constraints make that impossible for now. This approach allows Season 2 to explore new emotional layers and alternate dimensions while keeping the original material intact.
