James Gunn has just given the biggest update on the future of the DC Universe since announcing the first wave of projects. He shared new details about 13 upcoming movies and TV shows planned for Chapter 1, titled “Gods and Monsters.” With his Superman movie behind us, it’s clear that DC Studios is only just getting started.

On the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Gunn opened up about these 13 potential DCU projects. He discussed some major characters, including the new takes on Batman and Wonder Woman, along with updates on projects that have already wrapped filming.

1. Matt Reeves’ The Batman

Gunn discussed the script for The Batman 2, which he recently got from director Matt Reeves. When asked if he liked it, he kept his answer straightforward: “I like it.” He also confirmed that the movie is still on track for its scheduled release in October 2027.

He added a little more detail, saying, “For sure, we’re headed in the right direction. So there’s some things we still got to work out, but it’s headed in the right direction.”

2. The Brave and The Bold

The conversation then turned to the DCU’s upcoming Batman movie, The Brave and The Bold. Horowitz noted that the film is still in the writing phase, and when he asked Gunn if he wanted both The Batman 2 and The Brave and The Bold to come out in the same year, Gunn answered, “Probably not. Probably not the same calendar year.”

When asked if The Brave and The Bold would be the first time fans see the new DCU Batman on screen, Gunn teased, “I’m not going to say that…” He confirmed that casting hasn’t started yet but responded to the popular fan casting of Alan Ritchson as Batman, saying, “I am a big Alan Ritchson fan. Both as an actor and as a guy. Let’s just wait to see what happens.”

Gunn went on to say, “Do I ever think about it? Sure. There’s people out there I think about, but let’s see [when] the script comes in. It’s not the furthest along thing. I mean, we have things that are much much further along than The Brave and The Bold.”

3. Peacemaker Season 2

Gunn also gave an update on Peacemaker season 2, making it clear that the new season will be closely connected to the Superman movie. With Peacemaker season 2 coming this August, Gunn explained what fans can expect: “Peacemaker [season] 2 is a direct follow-up to Superman. We have so many characters from [Superman]. Rick Flag is in it, Hawkgirl, Maxwell Lord, Guy Gardner. It’s the direct follow-up to Superman and very R-rated.”

4. Supergirl

The conversation then moved to the Supergirl movie, especially following Milly Alcock’s recent debut as the character. When Jason Momoa’s name came up regarding Lobo, Gunn didn’t hesitate. He enthusiastically said, “Lobo is so frickin’ awesome. Jason Momoa is so… Oh my god!”

5. Lanterns

The update on Lanterns was brief but positive. Gunn described the show as “great.” A few days earlier, he also shared that the series will mainly focus on John Stewart’s story, with Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner playing supporting roles.

6. Clayface

Gunn also shared an update on the upcoming Clayface movie, which is nearing the start of production. He described it as a full-on horror film, saying, “This is a total horror movie. It could be like a Blumhouse big budget horror film. But it’s within the DCU, which I think is a cool thing to do.”

So, fans can look forward to a scary, horror-style movie set inside the DC Universe.

7. Untitled Wonder Woman movie

When asked about progress on a new Wonder Woman script, Gunn simply said, “Yes.” He gave the same answer when asked if they’ve found a clear direction for the character.

Horowitz then asked if this new Wonder Woman will feel different from the Gal Gadot films, and Gunn replied, “Very, yes. I’m excited about Wonder Woman right now.”

In short, the new Wonder Woman movie is definitely in the works and will offer a fresh take, unlike the previous films. However, recent rumors suggest that Gunn and the studio are looking for a rising TV actress, someone like Milly Alcock, preferring fresh talent over well-known stars.

8. Flash project

The Flash, released in 2023, was one of the last films in the DCEU before the franchise reboot. Unfortunately, it didn’t do well either critically or at the box office, mainly because the story didn’t go anywhere and was clouded by controversies surrounding its star, Ezra Miller.

Despite all that, James Gunn said we can still expect to see The Flash in the DCU sometime within the next two years, since he remains one of the most iconic comic book heroes.

9. Aquaman project

Like The Flash, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom was one of the final movies released in the DCEU. Although Amber Heard returned as Mera, the film didn’t get nearly as much negative attention as The Flash. It actually did well at the box office, becoming the second highest-grossing DCEU movie after the original Aquaman.

Jason Momoa has since left the role to play Lobo in the DCU. But, just like with The Flash, James Gunn said fans shouldn’t expect a new Aquaman film anytime soon. As he put it, “I wouldn’t say the next two years for either of those characters.”

10. The Authority movie

James Gunn also spoke about The Authority movie, which was first announced in January 2023. He admitted the project has faced some challenges, saying, “Yeah, but that’s been a rough road.”

Gunn revealed that the writer originally working on The Authority has been shifted to another DCU film, though he didn’t say which one. He commented, “I moved the writer on to another project in the DCU that I think he’s really killing right now.”

So, while The Authority is still on the table, progress has slowed as the team focuses on other projects for the time being.

11. Swamp Thing

James Gunn also mentioned James Mangold’s Swamp Thing movie. He said they recently talked with Mangold, but so far, the script hasn’t been delivered. Gunn joked that Mangold has been busy with his many other big films. Still, he made it clear that Swamp Thing is still on their minds, saying, “we are talking about it again.”

So, the project is still alive but hasn’t moved forward much yet.

12. Sgt. Rock

James Gunn was also asked about the Sgt. Rock movie, which seemed close to moving forward with Daniel Craig attached. When asked if he hopes the project will pick up soon, Gunn replied, “Hugely. Yeah, I’m really excited about Sgt. Rock.” However, he made it clear that the film will no longer be connected to Challengers director Luca Guadagnino.

So, while Gunn is excited about Sgt. Rock, the director has changed, and the movie is still in development.

13. Rumored Mr. Terrific & Jimmy Olsen shows

Just before the release of the Superman movie last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that DC Studios and James Gunn are considering two possible spinoff shows, one centered on Mr. Terrific and another focused on Jimmy Olsen. With Edi Gathegi’s portrayal of Mr. Terrific receiving strong praise, fans seem enthusiastic about the idea. Still, Gunn chose not to confirm anything, so for now, both shows remain unannounced.

When asked about these rumored Superman spinoffs, Gunn groaned, looking like he might reveal something before stopping himself. He said, “Can we talk about the things that are out there that I’ve actually said, as opposed to the whispers online that are sometimes made up and sometimes real?”

All these updates came from Gunn’s appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
