James Gunn Teases ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 as a Prequel to ‘Superman’ Sequel
James Gunn has revealed that Peacemaker Season 2 will play a major role in setting up the next chapter of the DC Universe and will connect directly to the upcoming Superman film, Man of Tomorrow.
Gunn has been working on the follow-up to Superman, which he says will not be a direct sequel but will feature Superman in a major role. The new film is part of what he calls the “Superman Saga” and is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. Actors David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult are expected to return, continuing their roles from the previous film.
Recently, Gunn shared a photo on social media of John Cena holding his “body double,” with the caption, “Watch the Man of Tomorrow Prequel AKA #Peacemaker Season 2, airing a new episode tonight on @HBOMax at 9 pm EST/6 pm PST.” The post highlights the connection between the series and the larger DC Universe.
Gunn has long hinted at the importance of Peacemaker for the DCU’s future. “It’s a big part, definitely Superman leads directly into Peacemaker; it should be noted that this is for adults, not for children, but Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, it’s incredibly important,” he said.
The series is set to feature both returning characters and new faces. Gunn teased, “Lots of guest stars coming up, lots of characters that are showing up that we’ve already met in Superman. I don’t think there’s anything that I’ve ever done that I love more than this season of Peacemaker, so I’m so excited for people to see it.”
John Cena, who stars in Peacemaker, also spoke about the show’s role in the DC Universe. “This season is about furthering the narrative. Instead of standalone properties, all of the DCU is now connected, as you saw Peacemaker show up in Superman. I think what you see in season two is just a forward of that narrative. That whole DCU through line—it takes the 11th Street Kids through their next adventure, but it also has a lot to do with the DCU going forward,” Cena said.
With this season, Peacemaker is clearly more than a continuation of the original series. It acts as a bridge linking Superman to the broader DC Universe, and fans can expect storylines and characters that will impact future films and shows.
