James Gunn Unveils Jason Momoa as ‘Lobo’ in Supergirl, Dividing the Internet
Fans have finally gotten their first glimpse of Jason Momoa as the ruthless antihero Lobo. DC Studios co-chief James Gunn unveiled a fresh video tease on social media, offering a sneak peek at Momoa’s transformation for the upcoming Supergirl film.
The clip shows Momoa on set alongside Supergirl star Milly Alcock, who plays Kara Zor-El. Stepping out of his trailer with a cigar casually dangling from his mouth, Momoa is asked for his reaction to playing Lobo. With a grin, he simply replies, Finally.

The clip goes on to tease multiple shots of Momoa in full Lobo mode, set to Blondie’s iconic track Call Me, the same song featured in the film’s official teaser. The stylish montage gives fans a better sense of the character’s wild, rebellious energy and further amps up the excitement around Momoa’s long-awaited debut as the infamous antihero.
Jason Momoa’s look as Lobo has left the internet divided as some of them are saying that this could be one of the laziest casting choices by the filmmaker. One user commented, Literally looks like Knowhere, the location from GotG. Gunn needs to change up his ideas abit better because I get what other people are saying now.
Another user commented, He’s perfect for the part but somehow it still looks silly & underwhelming. I have the feeling that another DCU reboot will be coming sooner than anyone is currently planning.
One user reacted, I think he great at lobo but I’m afraid James gun does not have that long left of staying with the dc so I kind of wish he waited. Another user reacted, They couldn’t have picked a better actor to play Lobo. All Jason Momoa has to do is where white make-up and his leather biker outfit and he’s good to go.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, headlined by House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, marks the second chapter in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s newly rebooted DC Universe. The film follows 2025’s Superman, which stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is slated to hit theatres on June 26.
Jason Momoa has been incredibly productive leading up to his DCU debut, currently promoting his buddy-action comedy The Wrecking Crew, which releases on Prime Video on January 28, 2026. The film reunites him with Dave Bautista as estranged brothers forced to work together to solve their father’s murder.
Aside from his stint as the “Main Man,” Momoa has a packed 2026 schedule, including the road comedy Animal Friends and a role as Blanka in the upcoming Street Fighter reboot. He is also set to return to the sands of Arrakis as Duncan Idaho in Dune: Part Three, which hits theaters this December.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, directed by Craig Gillespie, is inspired by the acclaimed comic miniseries by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. The cast also features Matthias Schoenaerts as the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills and Eve Ridley as Ruthye, a young alien who joins Kara on her interstellar journey.
Fans of the actor can also catch him in the recently released A Minecraft Movie, where he plays the eccentric Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison. Between space mercenaries and blocky adventures, Momoa remains one of the most prominent figures in global cinema as we head deeper into the year.
What do you think of Jason Momoa’s “white makeup and cigar” look for Lobo—is he the perfect choice for the character or does the casting feel a bit too safe for the new DCU? Share your thoughts in the comments.
