James Gunn’s Secret DCU Project Was Too Good to Risk Getting Stolen So He Never Revealed It: “I Felt Like It Was Too Easy to Rip Off By Another Company”

James Gunn has big plans for the DC Universe, but he’s not sharing everything just yet. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn opened up about what’s coming in the new DCU. While most fans already know that Superman is the big kick-off movie, Gunn hinted there’s more happening behind the scenes, stuff he hasn’t even told top execs at Warner Bros. from the start.
After making Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel, Gunn moved over to DC where he’s now running things with Peter Safran. Their first major movie in the new DCU is Superman, coming out on July 11.
It stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
But there’s something else Gunn is working on that has him more excited than anything. He said there’s a new TV show in development that he loves more than any other project. He didn’t say what it was, but he admitted it’s not something that has been announced yet. In fact, he kept it out of his first pitch to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav because he thought someone might try to copy it.
“There was one thing that I knew about from the very beginning, that when I pitched to David Zaslav what the DCU would be, I pitched to him, but we did not announce in that first meeting because I felt like it was too easy to rip off by another company. And so that’s one of the main things.”
Right now, Gunn is finishing up Peacemaker season 2, which he says will be done at the same time as Superman in terms of editing and sound. He mentioned that Lanterns, a new HBO series, is halfway through filming and should show early episodes soon. Supergirl has also wrapped filming, and Clayface is getting ready to shoot.
He shared that several other projects are being written, with one script in good shape and another just getting started. Gunn is also writing something new himself, a project that nobody knows about yet. And this might be the next thing he directs.
“I always leave saying I’m going to direct something till I’m actually done with the screenplay, and then I say, ‘Yeah, I want to do this.’ But it’s probably what I will direct. Yeah, probably, to be totally realistic. Yes, probably.”
Even though Superman hasn’t hit theaters yet, Gunn is already thinking about what comes after. When asked if he’s planning a sequel, he said it’s on his mind but maybe not in the way people expect.
“What I’m working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.”
So while fans are looking forward to seeing Superman fly again, it sounds like there’s a whole lot more on the way, and at least one mystery project that could change everything.
