Supergirl first appeared in the 2023 film The Flash, played by Sasha Calle. A standalone film had been in development since 2018 as part of the DC Extended Universe, but plans changed after Gunn and Safran became co-CEOs of DC Studios in October 2022. The new movie was officially announced in January 2023 and adapts the 2021–22 comic miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.
Alcock was cast in January 2024, with filming taking place from January to May at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, in London, and in Scotland. Gillespie joined as director in May 2024. Supergirl will be released in the United States on June 26, 2026, as part of DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
