James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Did Not Underperform – Here Are Shocking Real Profit Numbers
James Gunn’s Superman has turned out to be one of the biggest success stories of 2025, earning both strong profits and praise from critics and audiences. Despite some online chatter trying to paint the movie as a disappointment, the facts tell a very different story.
According to Forbes’ latest report, the film has made an estimated $100 million in theatrical profit and is expected to reach between $125 and $150 million in total global profits once home entertainment and streaming revenue are counted.
Superman earned $354.2 million in the U.S. and Canada and another $262.4 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $616.6 million.
The movie, directed and co-written by James Gunn, not only revived interest in DC movies but also outperformed every superhero release this year, including Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps.
It became the highest-grossing superhero film of 2025 and made at least 40% more at the box office than any of the last nine DCEU films from the past eight years.
Fans and critics have largely agreed that Superman delivered exactly what the franchise needed, a fresh, hopeful take on the iconic hero. Reviews praised the film’s tone and performances, while audiences gave it high scores across major rating platforms. Streaming numbers and home entertainment sales have also remained strong, showing that the movie’s popularity extends beyond its theatrical run.
Some fans online have suggested that Warner Bros. Discovery’s current situation might lead to major changes at DC Studios, possibly even removing Gunn if the company is bought out. However, most reports suggest that any buyer would likely keep Gunn’s DC Universe plans in place, given Superman’s strong results and positive reception.
In simple terms, the movie is a hit. It’s profitable, loved by viewers, and performing better than most superhero films in recent years. The negative claims circulating online don’t reflect the real numbers or the overall response.
