James McAvoy Gives His Blessing to Christopher Abbott as the New Professor X in MCU’s X-Men Reboot

James McAvoy has finally shared his thoughts on Christopher Abbott taking over the role of Professor Charles Xavier in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot. While fans have spent weeks debating the casting, McAvoy has chosen to welcome the change instead of looking back at his time as the character. His response is a simple show of support for Abbott as he prepares to take on one of Marvel’s most recognizable mutant characters.

McAvoy spoke about the new casting during an appearance at Entertainment Weekly’s studio at the Toronto International Film Festival. When asked about Abbott becoming the new Professor X, McAvoy offered a short but friendly message for the actor. As reported by Entertainment Weekly, he said, “Good luck to him! Good luck, good luck, good luck.” He also wished the rest of the new X-Men cast well as they begin building a new version of the franchise.

There was no sign of McAvoy being upset about Marvel moving on without him. Instead, the actor seemed happy to let the new cast have its moment. He also joked about Marvel’s ability to promote its movies, pointing out that the studio has more than enough power to get people talking. McAvoy was appearing at the event to promote a different movie, so he did not spend much time discussing the future of the X-Men series.

Abbott now has the difficult job of putting his own stamp on Professor X. The character has already been played by both McAvoy and Patrick Stewart, with the two actors offering very different versions of Charles Xavier. Stewart brought a more experienced and calm approach to the character, while McAvoy showed Xavier during his younger years, including his more emotional and sometimes reckless side.

McAvoy first played the role in 2011’s X-Men: First Class. He later returned for X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse, helping lead the younger version of the franchise. His performance became an important part of the Fox X-Men movies, which makes Abbott’s casting a major change for longtime fans.

Marvel’s new X-Men movie is being built separately from those earlier films. This will be the first major X-Men movie created from the ground up as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox. Jake Schreier is directing the film, which is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028.

Abbott will be joined by a new group of actors playing several famous mutants. Sadie Sink has been cast as Jean Grey, while Samara Weaving will play Emma Frost and Kit Connor will take on Cyclops. Maya Boyd is set to play Storm, with Inde Navarrette as Rogue. Adam Driver has also joined the cast in a villain role, giving the new movie another major name.

The casting has naturally created plenty of discussion online. Some fans were hoping McAvoy or Stewart would continue as Xavier, while others are interested in seeing what a completely new cast can do with the characters. Abbott is also known for playing intense and often darker roles, which has made fans curious about how he will handle a character who can be both powerful and deeply emotional.

Stewart is not completely finished with Professor X either. He is expected to return as the character in Avengers: Doomsday, giving fans another chance to see his version of Xavier before Marvel fully moves forward with its new X-Men lineup. That means the studio can keep the older version of the character around while also introducing Abbott’s Xavier for the main MCU timeline.

For McAvoy, though, the message is clear. He appears ready to pass the role to the next actor without any bitterness. His “Good luck” message may have been brief, but it gives Abbott a public show of support from someone who understands exactly how much pressure comes with playing Professor X. Now the real test will be seeing what Abbott does with the role when Marvel’s new X-Men finally arrives.
