James McAvoy Shares His Excitement About Directing California Schemin’
James McAvoy has officially stepped into the director’s chair with his debut film, California Schemin’. The project chronicles the wild, true-life journey of Silibil ‘N’ Brains, a rap duo from Dundee who manufactured American personas to successfully land a major record deal, only for their elaborate scheme to eventually unravel.
The film features Samuel Bottomley and Seamus McLean Ross in the lead roles, portraying the ambitious rappers Billy Boyd and Gavin Bain. During the closing gala of the 22nd annual Glasgow Film Festival, the cast and crew gathered outside the Glasgow Film Theatre to celebrate the project’s premiere.
McAvoy shared his appreciation for the journey of bringing this specific Scottish narrative to the big screen. “I consider myself very lucky to be here,” he remarked during the red carpet festivities.
He emphasized the determination of the duo, noting, “So much has gone down to get here, to tell this story about two guys from Scotland who had the talent, had the dream, had the work ethic, and just had the wrong accent, or so they were told.”

Regarding the challenges of his first time leading a production, McAvoy reflected on the intensity of the experience. “It was really amazing, rewarding, fulfilling, hard, not always enjoyable, but really fulfilling and with it all the way,” he stated. He added that he felt genuinely privileged to collaborate with the young actors who anchor the film.
Bottomley highlighted the emotional core of the production, suggesting it is a narrative defined by connection. “At its heart, it’s a story about love and friendship, not only love for hip-hop but the love these people share for each other,” he explained.
Supporting cast member Lucy Halliday noted that the film offers a refreshing change of pace for Scottish cinema. “I think it’s a Scottish performance that we’ve not seen. We’ve all seen the likes of the gritty police shows, which are great, but this is a really fun movie,” she observed.
Rebekah Murrell, who plays the group’s agent, Tessa, shared how McAvoy framed the project’s specific energy for the cast. She mentioned that he described the film as a unique blend of 8 Mile and Superbad.
She praised the overall production, affirming that the entire creative team had worked exceptionally well together. James McAvoy has had a prolific career as an actor, recently gaining acclaim for his chilling lead performance in the 2024 horror-thriller Speak No Evil.
Outside of his move into directing, he remains one of the UK’s most versatile performers, with a resume that includes the X-Men franchise, Atonement, and the television adaptation of His Dark Materials. Fans are eager to see if this directorial debut will lead to further behind-the-camera projects for the star.
The film California Schemin’ is expected to reach wider audiences later this year following its festival run. By focusing on such a bizarre and quintessential Scottish story, McAvoy has managed to capture a piece of local music history that many outside of Dundee might have otherwise forgotten.
His transition into directing is seen by many critics as a natural evolution for a performer who has spent decades observing the industry from the inside. As the Glasgow Film Festival concludes, the buzz surrounding the project continues to grow.
