Jared Leto’s Skeletor Is Toxic Masculinity Made Flesh, Says Director Travis Knight
Director Travis Knight is giving a new take on one of the most famous villains in pop culture with the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie. In a recent interview with Empire, Knight explained that Jared Leto’s version of Skeletor is designed to be more than just a scary skeleton; he is now meant to represent toxic masculinity in its purest form.
“Jared approached us, because he loves Skeletor and has his own history with the character. He wanted to swing for the fences. And ultimately we landed on something that I’m really happy with. Skeletor’s kind of the embodiment of toxic masculinity,” Knight told Empire.
Knight explained that while the original 1980s cartoon Skeletor was funny and scary, he also had a lot of insecurities. The new film aims to expand on that, showing how Skeletor’s obsession with power and control is rooted in his own ego and personal issues. This version of the character is not just a monster; he is a villain whose toxic need to dominate others hides his inner flaws.
The director also emphasized staying true to Skeletor’s iconic look. “I said, ‘F*** that s****. Skeletor has a skull face. It’s a living, talking, emoting skull, and that’s that,’” Knight said. Fans of the classic design can rest easy knowing that Skeletor’s skull face remains intact.
Jared Leto, known for fully immersing himself in roles, is expected to bring a lot of intensity to the character. He recently worked on Tron: Ares, and a movie about Andy Warhol, where he is both acting and producing. Fans are excited to see how he channels the idea of toxic masculinity in this iconic role.
The Masters of the Universe cast also includes Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam and He-Man, who trained hard to get the physique for the role, Camila Mendes as the warrior Teela, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, and Kristen Wiig as Roboto.
