Jason Momoa Ditches Beard After 6 Years — ‘I Hate It’ and Fans Can’t Believe His New Look
Jason Momoa has surprised fans in a big way, by shaving off his beard for the first time in six years. The Aquaman star posted a video on Instagram on Wednesday showing off his new clean-shaven face, and his reaction said it all. “God damn it, I hate it,” he joked while filming himself.
Momoa, 45, explained that the drastic change was for his next movie role. He’s returning as Duncan Idaho in Dune Messiah, the third and final film in the hugely successful Dune series. The Hawaii-born actor said the shave was a kind of fresh start for the role. “Only for you, Denis,” he said, speaking to Dune director Denis Villeneuve.
Fans will remember Duncan Idaho from the first Dune movie in 2021. He didn’t appear in Dune: Part Two in 2024 because the character was killed in the first film. But during an interview in March 2025, Momoa confirmed that Duncan will be brought back in Dune Messiah as a clone.
The shaving video wasn’t just about the role. Momoa also used it to promote his eco-friendly water brand, Mananalu.
As he ran the razor across his face, he talked about how the original Dune movie played a part in launching his company. “I think it’s been about six years, maybe a little bit more, since I did ‘Dune.’ What was really special about that is that’s when I started launching Mananalu. At the time, we were one of the first ones to release the aluminum bottle.”
Mananalu has partnered with Boomerang Water to help reduce single-use plastic. Momoa says the goal is to reuse bottles instead of throwing them away. “For our children and for our planet,” he added in the clip.
The next Dune movie will also be special for another reason, it will include Momoa’s teenage son, Nakoa-Wolf. According to reports, he’s been cast as Leto II, the son of Paul Atreides and Chani, played by Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. He will star alongside Ida Brooke from Silo, who will play Leto’s twin sister Ghanima.
Momoa shares Nakoa-Wolf and daughter Lola Iolani with his ex-wife Lisa Bonet. The couple finalized their divorce in June 2024 after seven years of marriage.
It’s not just Momoa who is making changes for Dune Messiah. Fans spotted Chalamet with a newly shaved section at the back of his head during a trip to St. Tropez with girlfriend Kylie Jenner in July. He covered most of it with a bandana and cap, but the small detail didn’t go unnoticed by eagle-eyed fans.
Dune Messiah is set to hit theaters in December 2026. Fans have plenty of time to adjust to Momoa’s new clean-cut look, though if you ask him, it’s going to take some getting used to.
