Jason Momoa Drops Out of Sony’s ‘Helldivers’ Movie as the Search for a New Lead Begins
When Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions announced a live-action adaptation of ‘Helldivers’ at CES in early 2025, it felt like a natural next step for a franchise that had taken the gaming world by storm. ‘Helldivers 2’ proved to be a rare video game achievement, earning an 82 on Metacritic and moving more than 12 million units across PlayStation 5 and PC in its first four months after launching in 2024. With that kind of cultural momentum behind it, Hollywood came calling fast.
The project assembled a serious creative team from the start. Justin Lin is attached to direct, with Gary Dauberman, the screenwriter behind the ‘It’ and ‘Annabelle’ horror franchises, having penned the script. Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, and Lin through his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner are all on board as producers. The Sony and PlayStation partnership also had a proven track record in place, having previously collaborated on ‘Uncharted’, which earned $407 million globally and ranks among the top ten highest-grossing video game adaptations ever, alongside the award-winning series ‘The Last of Us’ and ‘Twisted Metal’.
Then came what felt like the final piece of the puzzle. In February, Jason Momoa was announced as the film’s lead, riding high off his role in ‘A Minecraft Movie’, which had grossed $960 million worldwide. Casting a known gamer and action heavyweight felt like a genuine statement of intent from the studio. Lin even appeared at CinemaCon to announce the film was entering pre-production, where he praised Momoa as the only person who could pull the project off, according to Inverse.
Now, just months after that vote of confidence, the project has hit a significant snag. Deadline was first to report that Momoa has departed the PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures adaptation, with no official reason given for his exit. Sony is already underway on its search for a new star, while other casting for the film also continues.
The departure creates a real challenge given the clock ticking on this production. The November 2027 release date was already considered a fairly tight turnaround for a big-budget film, meaning the casting process will need to move at speed to keep everything on schedule. Momoa’s schedule is genuinely packed, with ‘A Minecraft Movie: Squared’ currently in production alongside upcoming releases including ‘Street Fighter’, ‘Dune: Part Three’, and ‘Supergirl’, which may well have contributed to his departure even without a confirmed explanation.
Despite losing its big-name star, the project is still very much moving forward under Lin’s direction, with the November 10, 2027 theatrical release date firmly in place. The ‘Helldivers’ franchise is the fastest-selling game series in PlayStation’s history, with over 24 million copies sold and more than 2.5 million active players logging in every week, giving Sony every reason to press ahead and find the right actor to anchor it. Who steps into that suit could define whether this becomes the next massive PlayStation prestige production or a cautionary tale, so share your thoughts below on which actor you think Sony should be calling first.
