Jay-Z Defends Bad Bunny as Super Bowl Halftime Star
Jay-Z is speaking out in support of Bad Bunny as the headliner for the Super Bowl 60 Halftime Show, pushing back against critics who have questioned the choice.
The hip-hop mogul, whose company Roc Nation has partnered with the NFL to help select halftime performers since 2019, told reporters in New York City, “Don’t let them fool you,” adding that Americans actually love Bad Bunny, also known as Benito.
The NFL officially announced in September that the Puerto Rican superstar will take the stage in Santa Clara. Known for performing many of his songs in Spanish, Bad Bunny is one of the world’s most streamed artists, frequently appearing alongside global stars like Taylor Swift and Morgan Wallen. His selection was made in partnership with Apple Music and Roc Nation.
Despite his massive popularity, Bad Bunny has faced backlash from some corners, including a Change.org petition with over 100,000 signatures calling for his removal. Critics argue that his style and performances don’t fit the family-friendly and traditionally American image of the Super Bowl halftime show.
In response, Bad Bunny released a statement celebrating the honor, saying, “What I’m feeling goes beyond myself. It’s for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown… this is for my people, my culture, and our history. Ve y dile a tu abuela, que seremos el HALFTIME SHOW DEL SUPER BOWL.”
The NFL has remained firm on its decision. Jon Baker, the league’s SVP of Global Event Production, praised Bad Bunny’s global appeal and unique ability to connect with fans across genres and languages. “We know his dynamic performances, creative vision, and deep connection with fans will deliver the kind of unforgettable experience we’ve come to expect from this iconic cultural moment,” Baker said.
Bad Bunny’s appointment as halftime headliner highlights the NFL’s commitment to showcasing global talent and reflecting today’s diverse music landscape.
