Few places in superhero movies are as recognizable as the X-Mansion, and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ looks ready to tear it apart. For decades, the X-Mansion has been a home, a school and a battleground, and its image is tied to the identity of the X-Men. That’s why any new ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ footage involving the mansion gets so much attention.

Marvel has been hinting at the school’s destruction for months. The third teaser for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ started by showing Xavier’s abandoned School for Gifted Youngsters, where the X-Men had called home. At D23, a display included a massive destroyed Sentinel head and a mangled Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters plaque.

Now a car commercial has given fans the most direct look yet. A new still from Jeep’s promotional ad for the film, shared by the fan account Nerdy enough, shows the scorched “Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters” sign lying in the wreckage, surrounded by fire and a crackling green glow. The account described the moment as Doctor Doom wiping Xavier’s School out of existence.

The color is the main clue. In the D23 trailer, as Thor strikes with his axe, Stormbreaker, Doom effortlessly blocks the weapon, repels the Asgardian with a beam of green energy, and raises a collection of classic X-Men Sentinels, declaring, “Hell answers to me, for I am Doom.” Seeing the same green energy around the school’s sign strongly suggests Doom’s power is involved.

Marvel hasn’t confirmed exactly what happens, though. Earlier analysis of the trailer by The Direct argued that the large mechanical joints and damage in the background confirm that the Sentinels are behind the mansion’s destruction, and suggested that by taking control of the Sentinels, Doom effectively weaponizes the X-Men’s greatest fear. Either way, the attack seems to trace back to Doom.

The fallen mansion keeps showing up in promotional material. Marvel Snap collaborated with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ to release artwork featuring a burned-down X-Mansion, with the wreckage of a Sentinel lying in front of it. A booth at the Shanghai Expo in July also recreated both Doom’s throne room and the X-Mansion, suggesting both are important settings.

The returning mutants make it more emotional. The film brings in several legacy Fox X-Men stars, including Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, and Channing Tatum as Gambit. Watching their home burn is a dark start for those characters’ arrival in the MCU.

The shot comes from Jeep’s biggest Marvel push of the year. Jeep and Marvel Studios launched “A Jeep 4×4 for Any Universe” on November 6, the third and final chapter of a year-long campaign tied to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. The campaign sends Jeep vehicles through Avengers Tower, the X-Mansion, the Fantastic Four’s universe, and Doctor Doom’s Latveria.

Most of the campaign is lighthearted, with The Thing driving a Jeep Wrangler, but a glimpse of the destroyed X-Mansion shows the film’s darker side. Tie-in ads have revealed several world details ahead of release, and this one may show one of the film’s major plot points.

Fans won’t have to wait long to see the full scene. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in US theaters on Dec 18, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. Whether Doom levels the school himself or sends his Sentinels, the X-Men look to be starting this story at their lowest point.

Who do you think is responsible for destroying Xavier's School in Avengers: Doomsday?
